Really? What's different in the new one? Because I didn't even like the gameplay in the first one

old post BUt you can only pick one weapon at a time from hotkeys you assign to the dpad instead of assinging 5 weapons to different combat roles and switching between them is really clunky, they remapped the controls and it all feels really awkward and all the enemies except for the last one you basically just hold circle to win. the last fight you're a cool anime teen again and doing all the stuff you could do in the first demo felt like way more of a hassle

I'm the last person to take this stance on things, but I actually agree; I got a weird fetishistic feeling about how Lara's "injuries" are handled in the Tomb Reboot. Like, they just HAVE to get her smacked around a bit, it has to happen. She can't even stick a landing, she'll get knocked about, thumped, smacked, we have to shimmy her through a blood river canyon that's super narrow to hide a load screen...it's like "good god, whoever's getting off on this should just finish so we can get back to actual gameplay" but no it's just like that all game.

I'm also thinking about that mad world gears of war commercial where it tried to make the game look more atmospheric than it actually was.

Were the gears of war games actually any good, I never hear anything about them anymore tbh

They were OK but in ways that have been copied by much better games since then. Like the modern style of cover shooting was really popularized by Gears of War and so there's no real reason to go back to it.

rise of definitely toned down that aspect quite a bit, which is a good thing. also less linear with more of a focus on a couple of hub areas.

if you liked tomb raider 2013 cool but here's my big problem with it - it felt kinda like it was some sort of Female Protagonist Tax?

Like, you don't need to see Joel get violently beat down a ton in The Last of Us. He goes through some trauma, he's in danger sometimes, but the camera isn't constantly lingering on his terror, panic, and pain. In Tomb Raider every other cutscene is Lara getting menaced in some way, and it lingers on those shots. She's barely even a character. You don't learn a ton about her hobbies, she doesn't get to banter with other characters that often. She's just a woman who gets hosed up a lot. I can get what they're going for - Lara is scared, then she isn't - but it isn't like some sort of slow build. It just feels like at some point near the end they decided that the game should be a game.

And constant scenes of Lara getting beaten up or impaled in very uncomfortable ways made it hard to just enjoy the game. Tomb Raider, mechanically, is a game about shooting dudes and exploring, and it wants those two activities to be fun, but it's impossible to have fun when you turn the corner and Lara's falling down seventy rocks and crying.

And then everyone talked about how she was a strong female protagonist, or how it took a blank cipher and gave her an actual personality, but classic Lara had way more personality and fit her game way better. Like yeah, she was a dumb trope - cocky rich girl who liked exploring for the thrill of it - but she was having fun with it. She bantered, she flirted. Tomb Raider classic was also a game about combat and exploring, and classic Lara actually liked those things and could just do them without having to suffer for wanting to. It made it way easier to have fun with the game.

lara just gets beat up on. sprinting across broken glass is an active choice, a decision you make to try and get something done. hitting fifteen rocks on your way down a waterfall is just getting owned.
