it is march 1st, widely known as the first day of the best month of the year (beating out october by two points). march means spring, and spring means a fresh start. why not get into the swing of spring by increasing a skill you may or may not have been working on? do you like drawing? how about painting? sculpting? crochet? needlepoint? if yes, great! if not, even better! we have 31 days out of your long walk to the grave to get your creative juices flowing a little more, and maybe teach you some discipline, which arnold says you lack. here's the deal: if you participate, every day this month you gotta post an image that you have created in this thread. miss a day? no problem, just make it up the next day with two images. the goal here is to build up a habit of creating something, even if it's small, and to have fun! want to sign up, but you came upon this thread sometime into the month? that's cool too, just start posting something and keep it up until april! the person who shows the most consistency from beginning to end, and the person who goes above and beyond will both recieve special secret prizes that will be revealed at a later date! there have also been additional prizes offered by piso mojado, and even some stickers from fluffieduckie! everyone who participates wholeheartedly in the contest will be granted a special gang tag as well to let everyone know how much you rock!! now, i know everything seems cool, and it is!!! but i gotta lay down some rules 1. no photo manipulations or photoshops i know this is a bummer to some of you but clicking tools and filters is not a creative exercise! 2. no copyrighted or likewise characters yes, that means no mario or teenage mutant ninja turtles. nothing from webcomics, cartoons, comics, movies, or games!!! (the one exception i will make is for drawing forum members, for example i flunked out has a surfing garfield av and that would be ok to draw in conjunction with other avs but it has to be that surfing garfield. don't abuse this or i will call you out on it) 3. no zero effort posts just to make your daily quota if i see an mspaint stick figure that day will not count!!! 4. no porn or fetish art just don't! not here!!! not ever!!! so yeah! try this! even if you don't win the prize you will be able to do something cool and maybe find a passion for something you didn't know you had. i will keep track of everyone's daily draws and make sure those involved are held accountable. critique and suggestions are welcome and recommended but use common sense: don't be a dick!!!!! i am looking forward to this month and hopefully we will inundate this forum with hella tite depictions of the momentary existential crisis of being!!!! i love you goodbye. bacalou fucked around with this message at 10:12 on Apr 1, 2016 |

i need to ask two things about this quick if thats okay 1 can we use art from before march 2 can we use photoshop to make graphic art from scratch |
# ? Mar 1, 2016 11:45 |
you have to make it from scratch for each day and yes you can draw in photoshop but use your best judgement on what is acceptable and what is just filterfuck.

i understand that this is about daily creating things in visual medium, but suppose the edge case where you create some resources and elements from scratch and then go on to reuse and recombine them in different ways to tell a story or stories. like character sprites and backgrounds that only change when they actually need to. would that meet the criteria for this creative endeavor?

Does art that I physically draw on paper count?
|
# ? Mar 1, 2016 14:08 |

i was going to make a thread to do some drawing in, since i haven't touched anything regarding drawing for quite a while (which means I'm probably worse than I was before - and I was no good to begin with), but it seems it won't be necessary anymore. what constitutes a daily drawing though? are studies and sketches okay or do i have to refine it wether or not i'm satisfied? (i never am)

#1 I've never really drawn anything before, and this took a lot more time and effort than you might think by looking at it. Anyway, I wanted to capture that feeling of waking up really early and having your first cup of coffee and just doing something relaxing. The past few mornings it's been reading byob for me, so that's what I depicted here. I think it'd be better if I had some lighting from the window and the monitor, but all I had was graph paper and a pencil. Maybe I'll revisit this later. Also I just took a picture with my phone but I might be able to scan it later.

well, I mean I drew a few things once in a while probably. It was hyperbole. But I really don't draw much ever and I don't think I've ever been good at it. I am kind of excited to start drawing every day. byob is a special place where I don't let my inhibitions get to me and just do stuff, even if it's lovely. example: this post pretty cool.

I spent way too long making this for a different byob contest today so this is my entry, don't worry my future entries will probably be paper drawings because I'm bad at drawing but want to be better at it

I'm really bad but whatever, I want to improve my art skills. Here is a mask I drew today for my upcoming DnD character. I am not at all happy with this mask so expect a lot more of these lol. I rushed the black lines around the edges so they are super sloppy. I also didn't bother to make the top more symetrical because I wasn't happy with it by that stage. I'm just going to stop trying to apologize for all the mistakes in this because there are a lot lol.

MrWillsauce posted:nobody told me I'd be competing against real artists. No fair. I am amazed at the drawings I've produced in such a short time, however, and I think I can attribute it to two things: 1. Volume: If you shoot enough arrows, eventually you will hit a bullseye. I liked that hand drawing, but the other four hand drawings on that sheet were much worse, mostly due to weird proportions or lack of value contrast. I just threw away a stack of exercises from earlier in the class that I never photographed or showed to anyone. Good riddance! You wouldn't expect a musician learning a song to show off a recording of themselves warming up, or a recording of themselves playing the same measure over and over in practice. So I'm not sure why drawing students are expected to display all of the exercises they use to learn to draw. Well, I guess it helps to show them to other artists because then you can get motivation and feedback; hopefully this thread provides that for me. 2. Guidance: Most of the other students in the class are making as good of drawings as I am, despite similar non-drawing backgrounds, so I have to attribute our collective success to the class. I definitely recommend taking a class if you all are starting from ground zero like I did. I explained a little about my experiences in the class in my post here. Since making that post we have started drawing with charcoal, and that's the medium for my hand drawing.

A lot of our contracts are painting classes through dayhab facilities or nursing homes, all my private classes are at our local studio. I get decent pay ($50 an hour) but don't get paid for travel and have some sites that are an hour drive. Some contracts are weekly, other biweekly and some monthly so I end up with an eclectic schedule.
