WARNING: PRO/REL CHAT IN THIS POST The way I see it, the only chance promotion and relegation would work in the US and Canada is for MLS to be an umbrella organization, like the USL was for a while in the minor leagues. For THAT to happen, there would need to be, say, 36 teams in MLS before a split could occur. It's not just out of the owners' interests - the average NASL club's attendance is less than half of the average MLS club's. Could you imagine Edmonton's ~3,000 people helping soccer's standing in American (and Canadian) culture?

I'm still amazed the Revs not only still play in an NFL stadium, but have no plans to move out. Like, you'd think in 21 years Robert Kraft would do something. e: Why did nobody tell me Kraft was trying to get a South Boston stadium?

Surprised to see Detroit on the list of potential expansion. Also, Austin is on the short list

Remember when MLS national broadcasts were a hodgepodge of dates and times? At least now, Soccer Sunday has people knowing when (and where) to watch on a consistent basis.

The Aztex GM (the only guy getting paid by the owners right now) said about two months ago that our most likely short-term solution is at Nixon Lane, near the prison. A 10,000 seat stadium is being constructed there, and would probably serve us for 4-5 years until something bigger and more centrally located is built. It's not a football stadium! It's a rugby stadium.

I think the point AAC is trying to make is that not enough people care about soccer in America to warrant the existence of MLS.

WARNING: PRO/REL CHAT I'm 90% sure that the reason MLS is expanding at its current rate is so that they can one day introduce promotion and relegation that they can control. Since MLS is in both the US and Canada but only sanctioned by US Soccer, they could go around the rules and, in true MLS fashion, make up the rules as they go along.

Would this be the thread to discus the potential US/Mexico joint host for the 2026 World Cup? Because the concept is interesting - it would certainly be a boon for Fox Sports, who currently has the rights not only to the World Cup, but also to some US and Mexican national team matches.

MLS Cup 2016 will be played December 10, a Saturday, on Fox. Not FS1, Fox. A smart move, really, because there's not going to be any football on at the same time, college or pro.

Seltzer posted:Do the people in this thread think Atlanta can maintain a solid support base beyond the first few years novelty/marketing blitz attendance bump? If I had to name a place in the US least interested in soccer it would likely be the southeast (ignoring southern florida). Atlanta also has four teams in the big four sports. Capitalizing on a massive market is nice and all but to me there are some big warning signs. What are Atlanta's financials like? Of all the expansion teams I think they'll need legit name players the most (of a higher caliber than Kenwyne Jones. He's good but how many casual soccer fans in the states could name him). Calgary and Winnipeg beg to differ.
