The problem with Episode VII, as well as other modern blockbusters, is that they are DESIGNED movies. It was expected to be the biggest movie ever, so it was DESIGNED to appeal to everyone from the dumbest moron to the 95th percentile American (still a moron). That's why you have things like emo boys "subtle" angst followed up by in-your-face, over-the-head Nazi visual reference, followed by slapstick comedy. The movie is all over the place and has no cohesion whatsoever. The old Star Wars were just a simple classic tale of good vs evil and nothing more, the straightforward simplicity is what made them great.
