Bush rushing to get Georgia and Ukraine into NATO, and sending troops into Georgia after the 2008 invasion, risked a much larger conflict. It didn't cut deep enough, but it at least walked us back from the brink. Having Russia occupy like a quarter of Ukraine and slowly eat up Georgia is certainly doing wonders for relations with them.
