Whip Slagcheek posted:Westman Island is fantastic and definitely worth a day trip. We caught the morning ferry, spent the day on the island, and caught the last ferry back. Don't bring your car, wear comfortable shoes and just walk. It's a great little town and hiking up the volcano is definitely worth it. You can also hike around the golf course if you're into birding, you'll find Puffins up in the cliffs. Yep, down by the harbor there's a large rock/hill with some ladders going up. Once you get about half way you start running into tons of small groups of puffins.

kanonvandekempen posted:I'm going to be in Iceland with 4 friends in september. We'll have about 10-12 days, I was planning on doing some kind of 9-10 day round trip of the island. Are there going to be a lot of tourists around that time? i'm thinking of organising everything myself, rather than using a travel agency, but I don't know how feasible it is. I *think* I had 10 days total in Iceland in June (most daylight of the year) a few years back. We spent ~7 of them on the southern half. We could have shaved a bit off, but they were full days of hiking, sightseeing, overnight in the Westmann islands, etc. Like Whip said it's totally doable, but I can't imagine having had as much fun trying to do more. Off the ring road, the north has a lot worth seeing and a ton of fjords that will slow you down considerably.

Saladman posted:I'm bummed that I'm missing all the cool solstice festivals in Iceland by one day. I should've flown in at the start of the weekend and not the end. I was going to say you weren't missing anything, but a quick search shows they do have a pretty cool festival now. The solstice was pretty much a non-event in 2012.

Whip Slagcheek posted:Go to Vestmannaeyjar. The ferry is cheap, fast, and runs throughout the day. Eldfell is a great hike and gives you a great overall view of the surrounding area. The golf course is accessible to the public and the cart trail provides a good opportunity to look for seabirds (puffins) up in the cliffs. Back in 2013, the largest concentration of puffins we saw the whole trip was an Heimaklettur down at the harbor. According to this site (http://www.summitpost.org/heimaklettur-home-rock/855652) the Westmans account for 20% of the world's puffin population.
