No Irony Allowed Personally, I think it's beyond doubt that a single-payer system is the most cost-effective way to provide quality healthcare to a country's people. Since I also believe access to decent healthcare is a basic human right, I am glad that pragmatism and idealism are united on this issue.

I believe that increasing ethnic and cultural diversity results in a fractious and distrustful population, making it much harder to implement egalitarian social policy.

Idealistic candidates are great for the one election they're involved in but history is full of compromise and slow progress in nearly every movement and these candidates either wind up becoming hated by their former fans for 'selling out' by making deals of their own, or double down and get nothing done by demanding purity above all else. I genuinely don't want the leftist movements to have our own version of Ron Paul fans who just show up to shout their favorite guy's name and death to anyone not him.

I think that a US-Mexico border wall would be a useful keynesian New Deal type project in and of itself while also securing the border against various criminal elements who smuggle drugs and guns. And that a secure border is also an essential precursor for amnesty so as not to encourage a huge influx with the distant hope of a green card. I believe that any realistic solution to illegal immigration will consist of a mixture of amnesty, deportations and voluntary repatriations depending on the illegal aliens' circumstance, conduct and history.

I've always felt that since the end of the New Deal, that another real Socialist political realignment was not going to become possible in America during my lifetime. Now, I'm not so sure. Like, I'm not saying it's happening NOW, Bernie is almost certainly not going to win the nomination at this point and even if he did his 'Political Revolution' isn't quite ready to coalesce within the down-ballot. But give it another few election cycles, maybe 10-20 years and... hoo boy, I don't know what the landscape is gonna look like. EDIT: I should add that all this makes me very happy

The trouble is, Bernie's all we've got. The Establishment/corporations have a total lock on access to the political system, there's no chance of a crusty socialist getting elected as an independent thanks to a strong ground game and local reputation against the power of Citizens United. Hillary is totally owned by donors and can't respond effectively even if she wanted to. But hey, there's an opportunity for any one of us to be one of the world's greatest socialist heroes if we're willing to step up to the plate for the next few decades.

Yeah, don't disagree, there's gonna be a dip after this election because there aren't very many viable candidates for that mantle, byt as the movement of the Republican party has shown us, populist anger doesn't evaporate: it simmers, and I strongly believe this is the *right* kind of populist anger that has been kicked up in the Democratic primary.

And I can't decide on a party. The DNC is closer to my personal beliefs but the GOP is much more powerful locally. My state legislature is nonpartisan which makes the whole thing way more complicated.

I think it's best to hang around until 2018 then primary challenge those members of the Republican establishment who've been incalcitrant to a Trump presidency, even if you have to go super local you should be able to ride a populist wave. If Hillary wins, Iunno. Guess it depends whether the GOP base and Trump democrats blame the GOPe for backstabbing him and making him lose the election.

I'll be too young still in 2018 unfortunately, I figure the earliest I could possibly run would be 2022 and that will be a whole new political environment. Problem is, I can't start cold, so I need to choose a rhetorical side soon and it can't be the wrong one or I'll look like a flip flopper.

Probably not, unfortunately. I have connections in the local working class community and really good connections in the evangelical community. Working class will be important for national ambitions but evangelical is key for local ambitions. My biggest hurdle is abortion. I'm pro abortion personally, but I'm afraid that it will sink me in my state. I'm trying to think of a good way to spinning abortion without ruining my national reputation.

Check out all the info you can onKathleen Sebellius' run for governor in 2002. By focusing on populist issues that were popular with the working class irregardless of their views on social issues she won a victory over her Republican opponent in Kansas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What%27s_the_Matter_with_Kansas%3F The coalition described in this book is starting to fracture as the social conservatives realise they're getting screwed hard and getting none of their own way by the eonomic conservatives. I think the easiest way to deal with liberal social issues in a non-liberal area is the Trump way, say "It's up to the Supreme court. I might not like it, but I respect the law and constitution of the United States, and the separation of powers is important, look how our 2nd amendment rights have also been defended by them." or whatever. Make an appeal to individual liberty. The Saurus has issued a correction as of 05:19 on Mar 13, 2016 |

I think identity politics have largely been a failure and a lot of social justice rhetoric is college-educated people on Facebook trying to lord their superior knowledge over others instead of trying to create a more equitable society.

I don't think we should deport illegals who didn't commit crimes other than illegally entering the U.S. or overstaying their visa. As long as they're never allowed to vote, they can stay IMHO (Sorry, but if I'm going to be a nice welcoming guy, I ain't forfeiting my second amendment rights or more tax dollars to the Democrats courtesy of millions of new Democrat voters).

I'm not even sure if these count as political opinions, but I think about this poo poo every day, so here goes. A population crash is very probably inevitable. We will not create sustainable infrastructure on even nearly the scale necessary to support 7 billion people. We will keep using fossil fuels until we run out. At that point billions will die from rapidly rising food prices, not to mention the political instability that will result. Civilization will probably endure. The only optimism that I have in this regard is that I believe after the die off, we will begin again more intelligently. Geoengineering projects are (sadly) our best hope for dealing with global warming. We may kill ourselves with these projects, but we are even more likely to die waiting for a political solution. I am not some nut that is looking forward to the neato engineering solutions we will come up with. I just think if we fail to come up with an engineering solution, civilization is dead. Attempting to avert environmental catastrophe is the only political battle that matters for the foreseeable future, because it is far, far more important than all other issues combined. So, although I have stated that I believe there will never be a political solution, I expect to be a single-issue sustainability voter for the rest of my life. I am simply holding out hope that I am completely wrong.
