I could never describe this itch of a problem I had with The Clintons, but this describes it perfectly. They clearly stand a considerable distance away from the general American left on specific issues. However, they make sure they don't walk far enough so their feet don't cross the line, in order to not raise any alarms. Even if they personally wish they could walk a few feet further.
