Lichy posted:why do sea slugs need an internal shell An internal structure remains important for keeping things like organs in alignment. Large animals almost always need a framework of some kind (though there's always jellyfish and etc. to disprove that as a hard and fast rule).

Is the whelk a gastropod? If so, what can you tell me about it? Whelks are indeed gastropods. Like "limpets" (and "fish", actually) the word "whelk" does not refer to specific taxa in a scientifically defensible way. It simply means, "one of the marine snails we will eat". That said, there is a family of "true whelks", Buccinidae. The common whelk is indeed a member of Buccinidae. The lightning whelk is not. The lightning whelk has a bit of a yin/yang thing going on with the knobbed whelk. Can you tell the difference in this whelk quiz? Confession: After watching a stupid episode of a Saturday morning cartoon (Animaniacs??) which had a TMNT parody but instead of mutant turtles they were slugs whose weakness was salt that caused them to froth at the mouth and die I decided to put salt on a slug to see what would happen. It was probably the cruelest thing I have ever done and I am literal garbage for doing it. I am sorry I wrong you, slug

One time I put my hand on a tree and there was a slug right there. It was a very disturbing and distressing cold, wet and slimy feeling and I remember it to this day. I respect the creatures of this thread, though. How far up the tree do you have to go to find a common ancestor between jellyfish and these guys.
