gawker's shittyness is pretty benign (other than the time they outed that random C-level banking dude which was a supremely bad editorial decision). by benign i mean attempts to be funny falling flat and dramatic first person essays about bodyshaming or whatever ...

but they manage to be despised by redditors, MRAs, red pillers, gamergate idiots, breitbarters, etc, to crazy levels. like, there's no real winner or loser in this hulk hogan case. the "first amendement" argument is pretty disingenuous - no one needs to see hulk hogan loving and the fact that he talked about his sex life on shock jock radio shows doesn't all of a sudden make actual footage of hulk hogan loving necessary for the public. on the other hand, it's pretty clear that hulk hogan went after gawker to keep them from releasing recordings where he said the n word, which ended up harming his career a hell of a lot more than a video of him loving. so i don't really care what happens to either party. the fact that these various white dude clubs really loving care nudges me a little bit in Gawker's camp, because these gross internet pockets should be called out on their bullshit and gawker happens to be in a good position to do that.

i like the awl better though.

the verdict isn't that good for journalism as a whole but it will likely be reduced on appeal and gawker handled it so poorly even the screechiest libertarian free speech types found it distasteful to defend them.

Gawker usually solicits info for things they want to publish? I kind of doubt the editor wanted Wilson's address for his personal satisfaction, and his "well he's got a police guard so what could go wrong?" position shows that he doesn't quite understand that police can't block bullets.

Gawker represents, to me, a collection of people who think the paparazzi is good and that it's perfectly fine to harass people and invade privacy for self gain. They keep coming back to these lovely practices time and time again, gawker stalker celebrity harassment app, hosting rape videos and insulting the rape victims, hosting revenge porn, etc... I hope this gets the message across to everyone in journalism that you shouldn't be an absolute poo poo-oval office.

I don't think it's complete poo poo or anything, but I'm not going to cry if some TMZ-type journalism website goes down the drain. Terrible people hating it makes me want to like it, but I can't find anything redeeming about it.

Celebrity sex antics are totally news. Publishing the actual hidden cam sex tapes is not. The fappening was news, publishing the actual stolen photos were not.

Anyway, what Denton's "we're innocent because Hogan is racist" strategy misses is that his motives for wanting to keep the tape private is irrelevant to the legal question as to whether his privacy was invaded. The real story was the fact that Hogan had an affair, which most outlets managed to report without having to show his genitals

i must have missed the rape videos they hosted?

the gawker stalker map was stupid but the "controversy" was overblown. it wasn't an app, in fact iphone apps did not exist when it was around. it was a google map with celeb sightings people emailed them about.

i get the sense that Denton has no moral compass whatsoever and some of their editors (including AJ Dalureo) doubled down on the site's worst tendencies. on the other hand i think there have been a handful of good writers that have done some good work.

It's a reference to an earlier story involving a college girl getting reamed in a bathroom stall. She was drunk, so no one's sure if it was "really" rape. Still:

quote:

In a separate exchange, Daulerio wrote to the woman, saying they wouldn't take down the video. "The best advice I can give you right now: do not make a big deal out of this," he wrote, noting that due to the video's poor quality she is unidentifiable. "I'm sure it's embarrassing but these things do pass, keep your head up," he added.

Fortunately they were considerate enough to take the video down once the her father called up and had a breakdown and maybe promised to keep her in check from now on
