Cyron posted:So I am a noob, why was MMA banned in New York in the first place? Way back in the wild west days of one-night tourneys and no weight classes and barely any rules to speak of, it was banned in a lot of states in an endeavor that was lead by John McCain. While he had some ties to the boxing industry at this point that made his sudden interest in keeping MMA from becoming a viable spectator sport a little fishy, it was honestly not surprising or completely unjustifiable. Big John ushered in the era of the Unified Rules and this got MMA legitimized in most states, but it remained banned in New York for corrupt reasons. Specifically, the Fertitta Brothers (Vegas mid-tier casino owners who are also majority owners of the UFC) do not allow their employees to unionize in their casino. That's legit a lovely thing to do, but the Culinary Union (the big Vegas casino employees union) has responded in an also-lovely way of lining the pockets of particularly corruptible New York politicians and pumping money into smear campaigns against the UFC where an ominous voice tells mothers that Mandy Moore will lead their children to become drug addicts and prostitutes because she enjoys watching human cockfighting.

This all reminded me of working at university for many years. Near daily three hour meetings where people say, "MOVING FORWARD, SYNERGY, STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE, VERBALIZE!" and then after weeks of grinding work we manage to agree that a loving font should be changed.
