You can train dogs to do that. Although some like mine just do that regardless. She gets very distressed if you're sad.

My best friends lost a baby 7.5 months into the pregnancy, the were understandably devasted. Their dog would follow her everywhere and took every opportunity to snuggle. It was espicially sweet because the dog is exceptionally energetic and high strung.

First time I met one it was at an insured's house, followed me silently all over.

And we're out front after the inspection, and this dog has a tennis ball in its mouth.

He'd look at me.
He'd drop the ball.
He'd catch it on the bounce.
Then look at me again.

It was very distracting while I'm trying to wind up my visit. She finally realizes why I'm so scattered. I ask what breed, and she tells me. Never heard of them.

It's her grandson's dog, but at 9-years old, he doesn't give it the kind of attention, space & exercise it requires.
She asks me if I want him.

Good lord, if I didn't have six cats at home already & a wife bent on homicide, I would have in a heartbeat.
