It's time to SWITCH to a guy in bed. Really disappointing presentation but at least there's some stuff in the pipes. Maybe Switch will be like the Wii U with a bad launch but eventually becoming outstanding. Hopefully it can do so without the catastrophic sales numbers, though.

It's nice of Nintendo to release Breath of the Wild on Wii U on the same day. It's like their version of Microsoft's E3 conference where they just straight up said, "Everything is also on Windows 10, so don't buy an Xbox."

Hopefully Mario Odyssey will be cool and make the system worth owning after launch.

I've missed a lot of information so forgive me if this is common knowledge, but what do we know about the Switch's capabilities in and of itself? Does it have an internet browser? Can it run Netflix? Does Miiverse still exist? Things like that.

You know I don't understand something.

"I can't believe that 1 2 Switch is a pack in" seems to preclude the notion that on some level people want it. But they've also talked about how utterly insipid and worthless the idea is.

I do agree that the game would be a better showcase for what Nintendo wants to do with the Joycons if it were free, but at the same time, there seems to be an utterly contradictory message inherent in a lot of people's words.

"God 1 2 Switch looks utterly terrible. I wish Nintendo would give it to me for free."

I think it's more that Nintendo commonly has a basic game/tech demo for their consoles to show off the new gimmicks like Wii Sports or Nintendo Land. People don't particularly want 1 2 Switch but just think it's strange that it isn't following tradition and being a pack in. I sure don't have any interest in it, but I'd at least try it if I got it for free. Well, maybe. I'd also have Zelda and I sure wouldn't take that out of my console for a $60 copy of the quick draw minigame from Kirby Super Star.

Buca di Bepis posted:

The Switch just seems like a parallel universe Wii U. Wasn't this supposed to be Nintendo's emergency fix for their last console bombing so hard?

This sounds strangely accurate to me. I mean, the Switch has some cool stuff and there looks to be some good games in the future. You're kidding yourself if you think there won't be some amazing thing that makes even the heaviest doubter want to plunk down cash to play. However, they're doing the same thing as what they did with the Wii U's announcement, only in a different way. They're not divulging all the information.

They've made it clear that the Switch isn't just an add-on for the Wii, which is more than can be said for the Wii U, but all we've seen is a cow milking simulator featuring controllers the size of a fun sized candy bar, massive framerate drops in the background of games, and the promise of free SNES game rentals with your online subscription. Nintendo is still strangely obfuscating so much about the console it leads the consumer to assume there's a reason for that and that's dropping the interest generated by the reveal trailer.

They're taking steps forward in some aspects but at the cost of things we've taken for granted as the years have gone by. They're telling us how we have to pay for online now, release is skimpy at best, and they haven't said word one about the internal specs or homescreen functions. I can live with paid online as long as it means more solid servers from Nintendo, but what about the graphical capabilities? I'm not a graphics snob by any regard. My most played Wii U game is by far Super Mario Maker. However, if the Switch doesn't have the power that third parties need for their titles on the PS4 or Xbox, Nintendo's going to be left out again. That's been Nintendo's problem since the Gamecube - being left out. Why they haven't beefed up their systems to accommodate developer demand in three generations leaves me completely confused.

Why can't the system play DVDs and does it even have apps like YouTube or Netflix or the ability to play video files from a USB port? A home console is expected to be a full entertainment system these days. You might buy it for the games, but those extra features ensure that you're entertained even if you just want to watch a movie or Buffy the Vampire Slayer with your girlfriend. Why is Miiverse going away when it was such a fun, simple thing? What's replacing it? We have no idea if anything even is.

I just want to know how the system works and Nintendo didn't tell us that. Even if the Switch is the most amazing console ever made and even if two years from now it has the best game library and a home next to my television, that doesn't change the fact that their presentation failed at generating hype. It subdued it and that's the last thing Nintendo needs right now.

Does anyone seriously wonder why the system without a disc drive can't play DVDs?

The wonder is more why it lacks that feature rather than why you can't cram a disc into a cartridge slot. Just put a tray on the dock or something. It's not mandatory, but it is something that other consoles have over the Switch that a lot of consumers will take into account.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Platinum will bring out next now that Scalebound is in the dumpster. Its E3 showing didn't really look fun, so I can't say I'll miss it.

Anyone who buys physical media these days already has something that plays it. Zero people in the entire world were thinking "I've got all these Blurays. Now I just need the new Nintendo console to come out so I can watch them."

Fair enough, but it just means still having an old PS3 hooked up for nothing but the occasional DVD. Like I said, it's not mandatory, but it's just one more thing. The rest of the point still stands. We don't know what apps the Switch will have if any.

Quiplash and Tee KO are amazing games. Drawful and Fibbage were amazing games that should have come back yet again for the third pack. Still, Jackbox owns.
