The left is both anti-imperialist and anti-reactionary, which creates conflicting opinions on Islam. Another example could be the Catholic liberation movements in Latin America too, but Romero was killed 30 years ago so guess what it's Islam right now.

But instead, the inevitable counterattack is that any criticism of Islam - in particular its tendencies towards totalization, legalism, and immutability, not just one or two specific verses - marks the critic as a racist, that's it, discussion over.
