When I was growing up our English teacher exclusively made us read books with racist slurs in them. Even the time we got to read a short story, it had a line about calling a bush an outdated slur just for the sake of being racist.

Catholics and protestants hated each other, Irish, Italians and polish weren't considered white, so if a book from 100 years ago is racist, that's normal, and no one gives a poo poo. just think, whatever is considered normal now will probably be racist in 50 years. better to not read at all just to be safe

Use them to try to strike up a conversation with a friend of a friend who studied at Vassar, and impress her with how non-racist and worldly you are. Let me know if you are the first person in the world to actually get anywhere with this.

Arthur Henry Ward (better known as Sax Rohmer), the author of the famous "Fun Manchu" adventure novels, was also a member of the Golden Dawn and penned a number of occult books as well. According to his own account, he started his lucrative writing career on advice gained through a Ouija board. He asked how to best make a living as a writer and the board spelled out "c-h-i-n-a-m-a-n". The novels that followed brought him fame and fortune and franchise that is still popular today.

Profondo Rosso posted:you can replace "racism" with literally anything and this is a big dumb baby view point to hold. "yeah this book is good, but its a mystery novel" doesn't mean "dont read it because its a mystery omg dont judge me for liking books with mysteries in it!!/11" it's just mentioning a facet of the book and allowing the potential reader to judge for themselves whether they want to read it (because you are not the ultimate arbiter on what books other people want to read). What if you know the person your're talking to doesn't like mystery novels as a trope, but it's so good that they should consider reading it anyway?

You don't need to do anything, who told you it was your responsibility to do something about it? Lots of great art comes with baggage from the past we'd rather all forget about but nothing is gained from averting your gaze from the uncomfortable realities of the past or present, obviously you have a responsibility to curb the prejudice that exists in your mind, but it's stupid to think we should just avoid being exposed to nasty realities.
