Just convert m4a to mp3 with sound converter or maybe not listen to Apples lovely music format? God forbid someone knows a little bit about their operating system instead of being "it just works" oblivious. You're the same guys who own a car but can't change your oil.

The reason people are talking poo poo about Linux using outdated info is because around the time of Windows 7 is when most of us said "gently caress this poo poo forever" trying to play with that complicated OS and meant it. We've been burnt a million times over by this talk of "Oh it's super easy to use now with x distribution or x desktop" and sure as hell aren't going to believe you now.Boinks posted:God forbid someone knows a little bit about their operating system instead of being "it just works" oblivious. Boinks posted:Just convert m4a to mp3 with sound converter or maybe not listen to Apples lovely music format? I have no problem tinkering with an OS to wring the most I can out of it. What I have a problem with is having to tinker with an OS to achieve the bare acceptable minimum of functionality, like being able to listen to music encoded in a popular format without having to perform a lossy -> lossy codec transcode. Sure, it's trivial to do a batch conversion with a recursive script and ffmpeg, but I shouldn't have to. It would also be nice to do simple things like be able to play games at a passable framerate and be able to reliably suspend my computer at the same time, or access files with CJK filenames on HFS file systems for when I'm copying over my backed-up data. The latter issue was marked as a bug in hfsplus 6 years ago and will probably be fixed on the same year that Linux becomes ready for the desktop. a busted-up mailbox fucked around with this message at 21:52 on Apr 3, 2016 |

Dunno about other distributions but for Kubuntu, and maybe for Ubuntu, all I had to do was search for "things to do after installing [my distro].[my version]" and read about what packages to install to get all the codecs for everything. This was very easy to do. If you're frustrated and having to gently caress with the computer, stop. There are plenty of excellent articles and forums posts that will save you a lot of headaches. I use foobar2000 under WINE (both of which were very easy to install from packages) and it works great. But the Linux media players, which aren't bad, play .m4a files, for example, as well. Edit: foob, like all Windows software that can run under WINE, isn't installed from packages, but from running the foob installation .exe under the Wine Windows Program Loader. The reason why the Linux players can play all the formats is because of the installed codecs, which for Ubuntu/Kubuntu, were collected in a single additional package. On again, off again linux dev here. Linux isnt the best at everything, theres things that other proprietary OS's do way better. You dont know what any of these things are. The average user who just wants to go online and monitor their facetoobs would do fine on linux if they were used to it. Also linux kind of suffers from this problem where it wants to appeal to the masses, but doesnt want to alienate its devs and power users so its split up into a lot of different distros with inconsistent quality and usability. On the one hand I think it's cool and remarkable that the linux community makes desktop distros but I kinda wish they didn't because they are really, really bad at it. Part of it is the fault of people like Ubuntu who made a bunch of dumb stuff. Part of it is the driver quality is always going to lag far behind windows because, by and large, hardware vendors don't care about linux. I know that has changed a little as I think some graphics drivers are slightly better now, but meh. You're not going to find a driver for your special snowflake hardware doodad that was made by a small company.
