I've tried really hard not to be hyped for this but I just can't not love a project as stupid, huge, and insane as this appears to be. I want in.

Gonna try the demo when I get home from work. The battle system looks pretty fun--looks like spells are usable items now and MP is just for weapon special attacks?--and I'm all in for this weird flying-car road trip with my anime bros.

See, that's the kind of thing I want to see and the game should go a length to show you that you can do this and encourage it more actively.

Given the kind of poo poo you can pull off in Lightning Returns, I wouldn't be surprised to see some harder parts of the game really reward that kind of play.

Eurogamer made it to the end and from what they say the game practically pulls a Xenogears Disc 2 in its final act. Guess we'll see.

This is what a lot of the reviews say. Or like an inverse FFXIII mixed with some of the criticisms of FFXII's story: the game starts out really open, then gets extremely linear in its last act, and the whole time, your party is never really there for the most impactful story moments (something a lot of people really don't like about FFXII). In FFXII they at least still happen on-screen in cutscenes, but it sounds like you just sort of hear about things happening that you never saw in FFXV, which would be pretty disappointing.

So is this like a bigger budget Type-0? I just saw my first gameplay footage, and it seems jarringly familiar to a game I couldn't spend two hours on. Is the gameplay 'better' ?

Reviews in general seem to be very positive about the combat, even the ones that are down on the story. Magic is less of a thing than you'd expect in an FF game, but the weapon combat is apparently fantastic.

Honestly my expectations for FFXV are basically that it's going to be the FF version of Metal Gear Solid V: great gameplay, dubiously necessary open world, story's treated like an afterthought but acts like it's more profound than it is.

1. Is the game as fun as it looks?

2. Does it have real dungeons, like I think some pre-release stuff suggested it would?

Not going to buy it until January probably, since I'll be traveling for half of December and I'm definitely not going to have the free time to finish it before I leave, but I do love me some FF.
