The demo's alright, but I could've done without young Noctis; only getting to play around with the actual mechanics during a single fight is lame.

I got two things from rewatching that Versus trailer: the old battle portraits were hilarious, and also that the last ten years must've been pretty weird for the JP voice actors. They were getting called in every other year or so for quite a while just to voice excerpts from a constantly changing script until development got properly on track a couple years ago.

e: Though speaking of old trailers, the oddest thing is that stuff seems to have significantly changed even from the 2013 re-announcement. Looking back, it's a bunch of scrapped Versus-era CG alongside possibly-prerendered gameplay that's incompatible with the current version of the story.

I haven't really been paying that much attention to FFXV. Are these four guys the only playable characters in the game or are they going to reveal more later?

They're the four main characters, but Noctis is the only one you play as.

As far as it's possible to tell just from the trailers, it appears the only things that survived from Versus are some of the character designs and names, the modern fantasy theme, and the Lucis-Niffelheim conflict.

XenoX is a fun game, but it doesn't have much in the way of a main storyline.

They isn't really comparable. Spirits Within was a big-budget theatrical flop, while this was created for the sake of promotion using CG on par with what they regularly use in their games, like Advent Children. It's not cheap, I'm sure, but it's not a threat to the stability of the company.

Yeah. Even SEGA put out fantastic CG trailers and shorts when they briefly flitted with putting effort into modern Sonic games.

I wonder how much of that comes down entirely to all the title screens with "Character Design by Tetsuta Nomura" across the bottom.

In general RPGS are like the worst at difficulty, because unlike most genres, difficulty only has 1 answer, grind more. SMT games dodge around that a bit with some combat systems.

Eh, the problem is more with communicating the options available other than grinding. For example, a boss being vulnerable to a crippling status effect, but most of the rest of the game teaching players that status spells aren't worth the trouble.

There are very few JRPGs that actually need you to grind to advance or in fact for anything but superbosses. It's just that people for a variety of reasons don't use other options available to them and go for the brute force option

Which always seemed odd to me. In most games grinding is incredibly tedious, more than enough to put me off compared to just reevaluating my options. The exceptions are weird stuff like The Last Story where a lategame repeatable encounter summoned crazy weak enemies that kept making Zael level for some reason.

FFXV had the dual problem of NEEDING more time and not being able to get more time because idiots were already going "Ten years in development!"

That's the bed SE made when they dressed XV up as a continuation of the Versus project rather than cutting their losses at some point in vXIII's non-development.

Pretty much. Dude's story is largely resolved through a bunch of letters lying around his corpse for some reason.

On that note, where does the Ifrit-Starscourge stuff come from? I've seen it mentioned in the thread but no idea where people discovered it. Certainly not the game as far as I can tell.
