If your Mii lands on its head or feet, it will bounce further than if it lands on its side. Take this into consideration when trying for dropped items.

For example, if you want cat shoulder, drop your Mii right in the middle when the pink triangle is in the center and your Mii is sideways.

I got it by dropping as soon as the triangle was in the middle and my Mii was sideways.
