Usually the gigantic gaps in the jaw are filled up with the baleen, but when they mounted skeletons they cut those bits out and sold them as whalebone

A nearby natural history museum has a massive whale skeleton that was endlessly fascinating to me as a child and into adulthood; I looked up the kind of whale it was and apparently they are considered by some scientists to be functionally extinct.
