Can someone explain to me why there isn't like a GPS beacon on the black box or something? I don't know what the hell I am talking about for the most part, but it seems doable?

Wrong plane, right airline. "Ukraine's chief forensic expert Oleksandr Ruvin survived assassination attempt in November 2015 Ukrainian law enforcement officers have detained a man, who is suspected of attempted murder of Ukraine's chief forensic expert on the most high-profile criminal cases. Oleksandr Ruvin, Director of Kyiv Research Institute of Forensic Expertise at the Ministry of Justice, was shot several times near his residence in November 2015 but survived. Police say the attack is associated with his professional activities." http://uatoday.tv/crime/police-detain-suspected-assassin-who-tried-to-kill-ukraine-s-chief-mh17-expert-628577.html Malaysian airlines are cursed. I think they were asking why airplanes don't send constant GPS position, so that once they crash we know where. The answer is that not enough people have crashed into the ocean and died to justify the cost of upgrading all the planes. Airlines only increase safety measures when enough folks die.

Mozi posted:This seems like a cause I want to be a part of - how can I do my part to help? Fly a LOT. Book tons of air travel, especially international. It's not guaranteed that you'll crash into the ocean and die, but if you do luck out and the plane does a 500mph ocean crash and your corpse disintegrates, and then nobody can find the plane, the global community might get outraged enough to coerce airlines to start tracking their airplanes. It's not a sure thing but if you wanna help start traveling and seeing the world. As a side bonus, even if you don't die while crashing into an ocean (argh!) you'll at least see a lot of cool places and experience other cultures.

And you ahve to be in like a mile range of it to find it. This came up a few times in the old thread, the thing is that GPS gives you the ability to know exactly where you are but it is unidirectional - you can't send a message back to the GPS satellites. You need to be able to send a separate signal out to either communications satellites or a local radio or cellphone link for other people to be able to see the GPS information that you see. There is no universal global tracking system keeping tabs on airliners and once it's crashed into the ocean the water masks the radio signals that the black box needs to be able to send out to tell people where it is. AKA Pseudonym posted:It does give off a beacon but radio don't pass through water very well and they never located the signal. The battery died long ago so it's a moot point now. There is work being done to create a global tracking network for airliners but this won't help us to find MH370 http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34793274 quote:MH370: New satellite plane tracking system agreed

I heard this theory about the Bermuda Triangle that the area is highly volcanic, and occasionally a plume of gas farts up from the sea floor and rises up as a giant bubble and then a cloud in the sky, and knocks down ships and airplanes. It went down in a volcanic area, so, could have been that. Im saying it was swamp gases. Nothing to see here, move along.
