This is awesome. Black Lagoon is going to make me seriously regret dismissing it as a dumb action anime if it can keep this level of insanity up.

e: Actually this don't really need insanity. The quieter moments are at least as good.

Black lagoon is about a bunch of broken people just scraping by, rock no matter how much he pretends, is just as hosed up.

The boat jump is sort of disingenuous to the rest of the series but the show is really good, and I think picks up after the first handful of episodes.

Black Lagoon is a tribute to Hong Kong action flicks--including the psychologically messed up main characters.

I'm honestly surprised how many of these shows I didn't watch back in the day, these are the ones I do remember watching however:

Black Lagoon
As mentioned in the last few posts, much more than just an action show, though there's a whole lot of that.
Its just as much about the character interactions and their individual archs as it is about shooting bad dudes and driving boat.

Renkin San-kyuu Magical? Pokaan
Comedy slice of life with what I think is one of the more unique character ensembles. It's not often you get anime about werewolves or vampires and only marginally more often you get androids or witches. But throw them all together and in a daily lives comedy rather than a horror/drama and you've got something really unique.

Strawberry Panic
As someone else in the thread mentioned, this feels like someone watching Maramite and deciding they needed to cash in on the shoujo-ai trend, but be a whole lot more obvious about it. Not in an outright pornographic way, but where Maramite hints at the idea that the girls in its show might be romantically inclined to one another, Strawberry Panic waves a big flag around and shouts it from the hilltops. If shoujo-ai/yrui is your thing... I'm honestly surprised you haven't already watched it. If you're not particularly interested in the genre, don't bother, as mentioned Maramite handles this better, go watch that.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Eh, while I suppose Marimite is technically the better show it's so mired in the class s, onesama, everybody is just really good friends poo poo that I've grown to loathe it over the years. At least Strawberry Panic is mostly honest about what it is.

More honest in what it is, but not very well animated or even very well written. Like I said. If you like the genre it's just fine, but otherwise there's not a great reason to watch it.

I've never watched the show proper, but I saw an episode that comprised of the cast all speaking English, and if they screwed up, the suffered a punishment game. It was pretty funny.

If you have time for a chill Sci-Fi, give The Third a try. I remember really liking it.

Man, what a good season. A lot of these shows really own.

The Third was incredibly pretentious but had no substance to back it up. Like, there was a narrator that would pop in and explain why things were supposed to be deep and meaningful. I found that pretty amusing, but it was definitely not what they were going for.

I'm just working through Black Lagoon now after the Goonami crew highly recommended it. Solid start, then it gets a bit navel-gazey for my tastes. Gonna be hunting down literal nazis now though, so that should be fun. Overall the action is the best part, and whenever there's no action I just want more action.

So you've watched like... 2 eps? 3?

The first chunk of black lagoon is honestly the least compelling. It's not a pure action show but it's pretty drat close so I wouldn't fret on that; it does get more philosophical at points though.

I really enjoy how the mysteries are revealed, but I do hope there is some kind of convergence in the end. It seems that Hulu only has the first season, though.

I'm sort of reminded of Shiki in the "creepy small town" and extreme anime hair.

It's a good adaptation unless you are that guy who keeps telling people to do the VN even though it's ugly as poo poo (yes, uglier). It gets the story across well. Ignore the OVAs though.

Assuming we are talking about Higurashi and not Umineko. Deen's Umineko adaptation sucks poo poo.

I am that guy but even I would never recommend using the default sprites. Instead I'd say play the game but use a patch to put in the PS2/PS3 sprites instead. The Steam releases coming out also have updated sprites though they're kinda eh in their own way.

Higurashi the anime is decent enough though, and was certainly better than having nothing at all back when the VN wasn't available. I don't think I could ever go back to it though.

It doesn't matter if you want updated CG that look pretty or if Ryukishi's style endears more, because Higurashi is a freakin' novel and if your brain isn't visualizing the scenes in your head you're doing it wrong.

the VN is definitely better but the anime isn't bad. the one thing it does do better is abbreviate the lady doctor's backstory, the VN got way too into the politics

Also worth mentioning that Higurashi Kai, the second series, improved and made up for most of the flaws with the first. They even included some helpful anime original content in order to explain things that had been cut out.

Finished When They Cry. I'll use the spoiler tags since it's a mystery show:

It was pretty shocking basically from when Rika was found dead (no explanation for that unless I missed it, which is possible since I marathoned 26 episodes in two days!) to the very end. Definitely didn't expect aliens to come up at all, but by the end they could've drained the swamp to reveal a UFO and it would be fitting. Overall, my favorite bit was something I initial suspected in the first arc: the girls weren't trying to kill him and Keiichi just went crazy. Also, I didn't expect it to be so brutal. Shion's nails and Rika's deaths :stare:

I'd recommend the show, but I have to agree that it leaves a lot of questions unanswered. It's not really a bad thing, though, since I enjoyed the ride enough to pick up the game and I'll eventually start the sequel. My only regret is watching it alone, since it probably was a lot of fun to talk about when it aired.

I just realized I never posted this video, but it's a cool "demo/concept" trailer for "Molly" Star Racer:

https://youtu.be/sZT3rbtKWBM

It's pretty cool, and uses part of Ayu's Euro Mega-Mix by Ayumi Hamasaki for the soundtrack, comprised of bits from from different songs of hers. I recommend giving the whole thing a listen to, and possibly searching out the full songs, because she's a good singer.

The second season isn't really a sequel as a continuation, insofar as the first season is not a complete story on its own IMO.

Hello i am now watching Gintama for the first time (i skipped the first two episodes) and arrived at like ep. 24 or so, and what the gently caress is this ending

It sounds like, i dunno, Greenday? What is this doing here, as an ending to a subbed anime? It's one of the, like two endings i've ever seen that i don't just straight up skip without ever listening to it fully once

actually i've had it on repeat for the last 40 minutes now, why is it so drat catchy, it's so simple and corny

It's by a band of Hong Kong guys who went to college in America. I think the lead singer has covers of English pop songs on his youtube channel.

I wouldn't recommend skipping the OP/EDs in Gintama. Sometimes they do wacky things with them (there are two OPs especially that are pretty drastic changes), though I guess you could look up what eps they happen in.

I can't remember the one other anime ending i've ever watched fully / regularly off the top of my head, but it was probably one of the SZS ones. But this is deffo the first one i've listened to more than once in a row. what is happening to me
When it's ending time, i almost always just X out, or skip past when there's something of interest past the ending.

To be fair, the Gintama opening (at least in season 1 so far) is also pretty listenable, i do occasionally let it play out, but mostly as BGM while i browse in a different tab for 1m30s
