If you don't have a rocket launcher handy can you just shoot the driver, or put enough bullets into the vehicle with a rifle/SMG?

The chopper? Yeah, you can take it down without rockets if you didn't bring any, it'd be some serious bullshit if you suddenly found yourself up against an unbeatable helicopter. Of course doing it without explosives takes a bit longer, and at the end of Trespass (which is probably the least enjoyable combat mission in this entire game and I'm glad we're done with it) the absolute last thing you want to do is waste time. The chopper will eventually fly off with Charlie, and then you get to start the mission all over again!

How about the visual part without the music? WMG decided to mute the video because it had a bit of Philip Glass' Pruit Igoe playing on the car radio. :argh: BFG Division was fine, at least.

Welp, let's render and upload that poo poo again. I guess we'll put some more Deadly Premonition music (not Life is Beautiful or even FBI Special Agent this time) on top of Philip Glass. Or just cut that whole section, it's not like there was anything relevant there and I only wanted to keep it in because Pruit Igoe kicked in with such perfect timing again.

Episode 37: That Special Someone

We finally come face to face with the man whose actions got the whole 15-man squad killed except for Niko, Florian and himself.

Spoilers for video: Choosing to kill or spare Darko doesn't actually affect anything in the rest of the game, you just get a different cutscene and dialog. If you choose to kill him, Niko shoots him twelve times - one bullet for each man who died because of him (as I mention in the video), for which Darko thanks him with his final breath. I chose to spare him because I feel that is the right thing to do storyline-wise and gives Niko something resembling a character arc as he manages to finally let go of the past.

So here's a thing. On my first playthrough, I killed Darko but on my second I decided to spare him... kind of. While driving away with Roman he started his little speech about how Niko should be proud that he was able to let go and all that jazz. I then ran over Darko which cut the dialogue mid-sentence and prompted Niko and Roman to immediately switch over to their "execute Darko" dialogue.

You got a laugh out of me for the Snake Eater.

Well. I knew there were two endings going in to the LP, (or at least the outcomes here) but not the specifics. Before the update I'd assumed the Darko decision would be the big trigger. (Though now I just go back to get his names from the spoiler tags, you said it wasn't, welp!) And then during the mission, I got the impression you'd chosen the other result... but then again this fits right in with Niko getting screwed.

Niko gets screwed no matter which ending path you choose, this is GTA IV after all.

No, El Dorado.
I wish they would have put more time between everything that happened there. As it is, it feels just like checkboxes being checked off! "Okay you chose that, so you get this, this and this." Just a small mission or two between everything happening would have gone a long way towards making it feel more integrated into the world instead of being the game telling you, "Make better choices next time, dumbass!"

Thanks a ton for this LP, Doc. I used to feel so guilty for not having finished this game due to getting frustrated with just about everything in it. Now I know it wasn't going to turn into my cup of tea later on!

Ah dang, I was hoping you'd go the other way. Doing the deal makes more sense from a plot standpoint since Dimitri has been the primary antagonist the whole game. Logically, he should be the final boss.

However, I find the revenge ending more satisfying. Everything plays out the exact same with the exception of Dimitri being swapped out for Jimmy Pegorino, plus you get to hunt the bastard down on his own boat like an animal. Also Kate dies instead, so no major loss there.

I kind of like Kate, though I'll admit I dislike the setup there. Niko really does make it out to sound like he's only dealing with Dimitri for the money, but my personal reading of the situation makes me feel like the primary motivation is minimizing trouble and easing his passage 'out'.

Pruit Igoe by Philip Glass (from the film Koyaanisqatsi) has been making a few appearances lately (would've been more prominent in the previous episode if it wasn't for WMG's copyright robots :argh:) and a brief snippet will also play before the end credits.

Oxygene part 4 by Jean Michel Jarre shows up a couple of times in the latest video.

Both of these tracks play on The Journey, which has one of the smallest playlists of any radio station in this game so they end up being in frequent rotation and also have a good chance to pop up just in time for dramatic moments.

Pegorino is treated like a joke by all the important mob families, which is why he's so desperate to get on the Commission and gain some standing. He's still not someone you'd exactly want to piss off.

The original plan was to just show this ending, but if there is interest I can show off the other one as well. To be perfectly honest, I've never actually seen the other ending myself because I never pick the Revenge option.

I hear they finally patched out the game-breaking glitch from that final mission, too! With... the patch... that re-enabled GFWL and made my saves incompatible (I had used a third-party patch to remove GFWL in order to downgrade my game to a version that works). :gonk: Welp, let's see if I still have an Xbox save from that part of the game, then!

edit: Okay good, I do in fact have an Xbox save right before the big choice. Might as well get this done so I never have to play GTA IV again (until I decide to LP the Episodes, I guess)

Well, basically if your game is running at a certain frame rate (higher than 30 fps, I think) on PC, you can't complete the part where you have to mash a button to climb onto a chopper. It is (or was) in both versions of the final mission, and I actually had to lock the fps to 30 in order to complete the mission. No such problems on the consoles, of course, since those (especially the PS3 version) have trouble reaching 30 fps at the best of times.

Not right away, no. I'll make a thread for them later, but I really need a break from GTA IV after this. The next VLP I'm doing is going to be set somewhere around the town of Blackwater. Or Stilwater. I forget which.

Maybe it makes more sense the way it plays out? But as far as the choice goes, I can't see any reason why you'd choose not to kill Dmitri at that point. Like you say, Dmitri's been an antagonist since near the beginning, so why would Niko work with him now? gently caress that guy. Really he should just not agree to help Pegorino, but since he already did that in a cutscene the only reasonable choice is to go kill Dmitri.

And yes, he should be the final boss. The game story should end when you kill him, whether that be after Roman's wedding or before.

The whole game's just kind of a mess like that. It was developed in a time where player agency was the Next Big Thing (Mass Effect, et cetera), but the choices were kind of hamfisted into the game, almost like they were afterthoughts. For all we know, they were afterthoughts and instead of being linear mission progression they just tweaked them to work in a forked path fashion. Considering how many of the choices affect so little of the game (only the Deal/Revenge choice affects the plot in any way shape or form), it's entirely possible choices were added later on in development.

The only interaction with Dimitri was the phone call; if he hadn't decided to go rogue Niko would've collected $250k for nothing more than driving into a parking lot with absolutely no connection whatsoever with Dimitri (as was promised, to be somewhat fair to Pegorino).

It would've been a more compelling choice if money were more of a useful object in the game. It'd be one thing if you'd been scraping by with a few hundred here, a thousand there, trying to balance between buying better weapons or body armor or whatever and then suddenly the opportunity for a huge windfall like this came into your lap, but as we can see in Doc's video he's sitting on half a million in cash as it is.

Episode 39: A Dish Served Cold (Revenge Ending 01)

We go back to the Xbox 360 version to look at the other ending path and wrap up a couple of loose ends.

Here's a transcript of the post-mission phone call I missed because of lovely controls:

quote:

Niko: I killed Dimitri. It's over. He was on the Platypus, the boat I arrived to Liberty City on, so it seems it ends where it began.

Roman: I guess you did what you thought you had to do, no deal, no money, no hot tubs and models, but Dimitri will not bother you again, I will see you at the wedding yes? Remember to wear a suit.

Niko: I'll be there Roman. Don't worry.

Episode 40: Out of Commission (Revenge Ending 02)

I don't know, J-Peg just feels like such a weak antagonist for the final mission of the game. I think the Deal equivalent of this mission is a lot more dramatic anyway, but we'll be seeing that soon enough. Also, I do apologize for my terrible driving (and general poor gameplay performance) in this video.

I have no idea what you're trying to say in the second sentence. Write in Russian, use the IPA, or just go "E like in SomEword". I have no idea why people would ever try to express phonetics in English without resorting to one of the above.

Basically, Alexander normally stands for Russian Александр, the bold part stands for "dr", a consonant cluster. If you were to put an "e" there, like in Alexander, it would look and sound extremely weird. Which is exactly the case with "Dimitri"
