It's interesting how the American Godzilla is a good guy but the Japanese Godzilla is a bad guy.

I had only ever seen the really old Godzilla movies growing up, so my entire understanding of him was based on the original movie and all of the goofy stuff in the 70s with Megalon and whatnot. I recently started watching the 90s and 00s movies and was pretty surprised that Godzilla has basically been a bad guy for like the past 20 years. Not only that, but there were a few scenes in the various movies that were downright scary. I can't remember what movie it was, but there was a shot of him standing in the ocean while a girl stood on a dock and they were looking at each other. It only last a few seconds but for some reason it was really chilling.

This new version of Godzilla really reminds me of a cat ready to pounce. He's standing there motionless and his tail is whipping back and forth right before he strikes.

Edit: I was also surprised how many of the roles were reversed. I thought Ghidorah was the ultimate villain, but he was a good guy in some of the newer movies fighting Godzilla.

Godzilla is the villain in both GxMG and Tokyo SOS as well.

Out of curiosity, I checked and found he appears to be the villain or one of the bad guys in these movies:

Return of Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Biollante
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Godzilla vs. Mothra
Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.

So roughly half of the "modern" era. (I'm defining modern as during my lifetime of Godzilla '85 and onward, ha.) It could also just be that I had more of a reaction to some of the more serious portrayals of destruction and fighting in some of those movies, having grown up watching a small handful of relatively playful Showa movies. Stuff like having Godzilla electrocuted so badly by Mechagodzilla that he starts foaming at the mouth and barfing in GvMG2 seems kinda brutal when I'm used to the Super Friends version.

I guess the real take away is I need to watch more Godzilla.

I can't believe Gareth Edwards didn't say at some point, "Dude, are you awake? You can emote, I won't get angry."

I can't remember where I read it, but he was supposed to be very calm and collected at all times to (a) reflect his training in the military and bomb squad unit and (b) to contrast with his animated and emotional father. During filming Taylor-Johnson supposedly went somewhere where he wasn't recognized as an actor and the folks around him thought he was in the military because he was informally in-character since he was used to acting stoically and mechanically for the role. I think this might have been in that Art of Destruction making-of book where Edwards discussed it.

I've never really had a problem with his performance because it's how I figured someone like him would act, but I can see where other folks would want something more dynamic. I feel like he comes off basically like a military version of Grant from Jurassic Park, but a Malcolm-like character would be more fun. Or even just Cranston as is the common consensus.

G'14 put on a clinic in terms of misleading marketing. The very first trailer, with Godzilla rising out of the rubble and Oppenheimer doing his "I am death" speech, prepared me to see a film where Godzilla was death incarnate and rearing to tear humanity a new one. Instead, he was pretty chill and only wrecked people and stuff when it was explicitly in his way (the shot with him being flanked by Navy ships was cool, but I feel like that wouldn't have flown with the Godzilla we were shown in the trailer).

Yeah, a lot of misdirection.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIu85WQTPRc

You'll see a split second MUTO foot, but since at this point you don't even know the MUTOs exist you don't know what it is so it could be anything. They even show different versions of scenes to throw you off. In the trailer, Godzilla is roaring at the viewer at the end as the door closes but in the actual film he's fighting a MUTO as that same door closes. I don't think they showed anything really identifiable as MUTO in the initial marketing campaign. Looking back on it now with fresh eyes, I can definitely see why people were pissed that Cranston dies early. I never watched Breaking Bad so I had no real connection to him at the time so it didn't bother me at all. But watching the trailer now he appears to be the main character, he's narrating it, and Taylor-Johnson is shown for just a second or two. If Cranston was one of the main reasons I went to see it, I would be disappointed that he was only in the first 1/3.

The teaser and main trailers are two of my favorite ever and I think do a fantastic job selling Godzilla. "Those weren't nuclear tests. They were trying to kill it." HOLY poo poo.

And apparently the director hated Godzilla '14 teases:

quote:

We’re also fundamentally not playing the same game that Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla did and most monster movies do, which I’m sort of sick of the notion that a monster movie needs to wait an hour or 40 minutes until the creature shows up. Kong traditionally does not show up in these movies until very, very late, and the monster traditionally does not show up until very, very late in a monster movie, so a lot of these movies tend to have this structure that’s a bit of a slow burn. Something about this movie made me want to reject that and play a very, very different game.

So expect a lot of action.

I think the poster actually meant that Edward's reshoots on Star Wars soured Legendary on wanting to bring him back for Godzilla 2. I've never heard of any production problems on Godzilla '14 and everything I've read has been positive from everybody involved.

I'm starting to notice this steady undercurrent where for some reason Edwards is turning into a weird divisive figure like Zach Synder is among a certain segment of film nerds.

Edwards got the gig on Godzilla based on the modest success of one low-budget film that really wasn't very well known, and then Godzilla turned out to be a very divisive film. Rogue One was well received, but not such a unanimous hit that its going to shut people up who were already saying that he's an overrated director who's out of his league.

I'm not saying I agree with any of that but I can see where its coming from. I don't think Edward's reputation as a filmmaker is really set in stone yet, his next few films will really be what decides that, they'll determine whether he ends up as a footnote director or someone pay attention to for the next decade+

Ah, good point. M. Night looked to have a super strong and potentially iconic career with his first few films, but that petered out after a while. I have hopes for Edwards and have been a fan of all of his films, but like you said we'll have to see how things go.

Yep, I was going to say the something. Not only are the Godzilla scenes kept to a minimum to keep him special, but each of his individual scenes is special. Basically every time he's shown on screen is super bad rear end:

- Stomping onto the airport
- Being escorted around the world by the Navy
- Getting attacked at the bridge
- etc

There's no fluff so you can easily remember how awesome the scenes are. Even the glimpses of him on TV are badass when he's fighting the Muto. I think it's the perfect Godzilla movie.

My only concern with hurricane monsters is that everything will be so big and so busy that it will be visually crowded. Like how Doomsday in BvS was in a constant electrical storm was a neat idea but pretty visually cluttered even with experts like Snyder and Fong behind it. The trailer looks good, though, with a lot of wide framing.

Seems weird there would be multiple different volcano bird monsters unless they are a family unit like the MUTOs. I’m guessing the drawing is battled damaged (if Rodan doesn’t have feathers) or the toy has a layer of molten lava on its wings (if Rodan does have feathers).

I really hope there’s a lot of clear wide shots of the monsters. For all of the “LOL Godzilla is hardly in the movie,” when they did show him he was usually nice and wide with very little foreground obstruction, atmospheric effects like rain, or unneeded camera shake. When you saw him you actually saw him. Even when the camera was shooting through a window or car, you still got a really good look and the editing wasn’t too frantic.

The first trailer was promising and I hope they keep it up.

So Godzilla's marketing was red, Skull Island was yellow, King of the Monsters is blue, I guess GvKong will be green?

A little concerned that it looks like the big monster fights take place in giant storms with a lot of camera shake. It makes sense since each of the titans brings weather effects, but I'm still a tiny bit concerned since G'14 was so good with it's fights. Edit: I don't want anything obscured by rain or crap.

I just realized that in the first movie, Godzilla brought a tsunami when he arrived. Rodan is volcanos, King Ghidorah is hurricane. What's Mothra? Tornado? A tornado of love?

So if there really are only four films in this universe, and Godzilla already had the biggest baddest finishing move I've ever seen in G'14, I'm not sure what they're going to do in this. Will they actually kill any of the classic monsters? Like will Godzilla have to kill each head of KG one at a time? Break the first one's neck, then rip the other head open like the original Kong, and then in the climax a diamond cutter off a cliff onto a nuclear plant to finish the third one and the entire body off?

Edit: I would also accept a Lawler piledriver or a Steiner Screwdriver off a building on the third head.

Edit2: poo poo, with three heads you could do a piledriver and a double Evenflow DDT on the other two heads! There has to have been a Japanese promotion that's done this?!

G’14 had deceptive marketing to hide the MUTOs (the trailer had the door closing while Godzilla roared vs the movie had Godzilla fighting a MUTO while the door closed is the one that jumps out at me), so they could be hiding something even if it looks like they’re showing something else.

I love G14 and don’t mind the teases, but I feel like they don’t work like Jaws. The shark is hard to see because it’s hidden under dark water so it makes sense from a character perspective that Brody and the folks can’t see it. But the teases in G14 actively feel like a creative decision: characters see the monsters but the viewers don’t get to see what they do. I distinctly remember feeling teased when I first saw the movie and I never felt that during Jaws. I’m fine with it, though, because I thought you saw the monsters plenty in that movie and the views that you do get of them are fantastic. Seeing Godzilla lumbering into the bay in the super wide shot was stunning.

Rewatching Godzilla ‘14 in preparation for KOTM this evening and I just realized something about the ending. The nuke goes off in the San Francisco bay because they couldn’t get it open to deactivate it. The entire coast and the ocean is basically doomed, right? Nope, Godzilla absorbed all of the radioactive energy. That’s probably what revived him as he laid dying.

I hadn’t seen this posted before, but it’s like “of course!” when I saw the bomb explode and then everyone was alright the next day.

Violator

This movie is basically a dumbed down BvS combined with the family dynamics of Jurassic Park 3. The intro is a destructive scene from the previous movie seen from a new perspective that leads one of the heros to misguidingly become a villain until they realize the error of their ways. The end takes place when one of the creatures has unstoppable energy blasts radiating out every time they are attacked, with a nuke blast only making them stronger. Etc etc.

My biggest worry was that the monster scenes would all take place at night with atmospheric effects and shaky cam. That’s exactly what this movie is. I don’t care if there’s a storyline reason for King G to bring a hurricane with him. It feels like this movie learned nothing from G14 or Skull Island. Having watched both today before this movie, Skull Island in particular looks leagues better with clearer wide shots of the monsters and much better camera work.

And the human story is just as dumb as critics are saying. I didn’t think it would bother me but the first two movies have much stronger human stories.

I agree with everything you’ve posted.

I liked the movie and the director’s other work, but of the three Legendary movies I like this the least and don’t like some of the directions it’s taking the series.

Also, this may not be a popular opinion, but as someone who grew up watching Godzilla movies (and loved Vs Kong, Vs Megalon, etc.) I don’t care if this mirrors the previous movies or want them to integrate a bunch of wacky stuff just because wacky stuff once existed around the character. I want the Legendary movies to be a self contained amazing series. Have homages, fine, but I don’t want to hand wave away a bad plot just because movies from 40 years ago sometimes had silly plots.

But, even as someone who can quote a bunch of the silly stuff (“I’m going to Hokkaido! ... Don’t go to Hokkaido!”) my favorite is the first movie and the more serious tone so I know my tastes probably don’t translate to what other people want.

This was the ultimate microcosm: the smooth, gray, flat hull of the human story cockblocking the only interesting thing this movie had going for it.

I remember that moment too because it took me out of the scene. And it wasn’t done for some sort of masterful purpose like the teasing in the first movie or as a beautiful composed shot. I remember thinking that like 60% of the frame was taken up by the round pure white jet engine for no reason. Very strange.

Godzilla vs Kong delayed?

quote:

At a conference last week, as reported by Deadline, Warner Bros. Studio chairman Toby Emmerich noted that the studio wants to ensure Godzilla vs. Kong is a big time hit.

“[Godzilla vs. Kong] will deliver for fans in the way they were looking for,” Emmerich promised. “It might come out later in the year, so we can deliver an A+ movie.”

The current release date for the fight film is March 13, 2020, but it sounds like there’s a good chance that we’ll be getting a new release date really soon. Stay tuned for more.

https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3566316/godzilla-vs-kong-may-pushed-back-release-date-later-march-2020/

quote:

As far as franchise fatigue with Legendary’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters tanking, Emmerich said that next year’s monster movie Godzilla vs. Kong “will deliver for fans in the way they were looking for” in the latest Godzilla. “It might come out later in the year, so we can deliver an A+ movie” said Emmerich.

https://deadline.com/2019/06/warner-studio-toby-emmerich-peter-roth-dc-netflix-godzilla-vs-kong-kevin-tsujihara-1202629538/

Included both articles so you can see Deadline's snark about BO performance. Argh. Why do I always follow doomed franchises?! It's my understanding that they already filmed GvK so it's not like they can just cancel it at this point at least.

Edit: Here's the plot summary:

quote:

“In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.”

So whatever is left of King G is re-made into a new monster to kill the titans and G and K will have to team up to stop it just like folks here speculated. Maybe Vs movies are just hard, but KOTM and KvG really feels like they're using a lot of BvS broad strokes.
