Apparently this game lets you burn red life for a hit of pseudo-x-factor, which you can stack on top of actual x-factor

The anime is genuinely the most complete HxH experience you're going to get. It builds up an ending, hits the ending, and while it doesn't wrap up every plot point HxH probably was never going to do that anyway.

I feel like I've learned so much about hunter x hunter in the last page and a half In the gameplay video it looks like one of the supers makes the main guy, gon I guess, get tall and have hair that puts paul to shame and that seems pretty neat, I'm guessing that's like.. a super saiyan kinda thing? I'm not super into the designs other than the suit guy looks pretty cool so I'm not sure it's for me, but it's cool to see an actual full on versus style tag game coming out

If you wanna know what's up with Gon, the super spoilery context is he "traded" all of his future potential as a fighter to gain instant power in order to murder someone in cold blood, because that person killed Gon's mentor figure. The consequence of this is Gon won that fight easily, then the moment his unfulfilling revenge was finished he immediately became knocked out and sat out the entirety of that arc's climax. He was then on death's bed for almost the entirety of the next arc, until he was healed. While his body is restored, he concluded a few plot threads, and then realises he's losing his sense of Nen, HxH's power system. So he's back in normal school and hasn't appeared ever since he revealed he was losing his power over telephone. It has been maybe 5ish real life years since. Hunter X Hunter is good y'all and the game looks jank (affectionate)

Yeah, the neat thing is that Gon did a "I'm doing this SUPER DANGEROUS THING" Kaioken thing and... it was horrible and disgusting and brutal and nobody gained anything from it and he suffered unbelievable consequences to the point he needed a literal miracle to not be dead and genuinely lost his potential and it appears to be sticking. It's possible he could have been intended to come back at some point but it doesn't seem like HxH would ever get there even if so.

hxh is by the author of yu yu hakusho and the ending of yu yu hakusho is basically the characters turning to the camera and talking about how burnt out and tired of the standard shonen story arcs they are and hxh basically sticks to that by refusing to really settle into any of the action shonen rhythms. 'deconstruction' is a bit of a dead horse but it feels like it actively zigs when it feels like it should zag, and the end result's interesting.

and the big war arc that takes up most of the back half of the anime features an octopus with a sniper rifle going on a metal gear solid stealth mission and battling a giant lobster man

Yeah, I admit I went into YYH only hearing how bad the last arc was but it actually ended up being one of my favorites. Like "Kuwabara decides he is genuinely sick of shonen fighting and decides to buckle down on his studies and go to collage, and Yusuke tells him that is awesome and supports him" is genuinely my favorite moment in the series because it feels like a logical and understandable way for the character to go rather than just attempting to deconstruct for deconstruction's sake.

the ending of yyh is a really good idea honestly. the execution isnt great but i think there's a world where it just lands as both a satisfying ending to the series and also a sort of bucking of expected trends. like when the new bad guys show up and yusuke just starts screaming in frustration about how there's always a new, stronger guy, that rules.
