A stick won't make you a better player. If you've spent your entire life playing on pad, you should probably stick with that.

Also, try Killer Instinct. It is a good and fun game.

I'm in a really weird situation with fighting game controls. I grew up with the NES and SNES as my consoles (yes I'm old), so the + pad is what I know best, especially since I played a TON of street fighter on the SNES. I never got into 6th or 7th gen console gaming, so analog sticks are completely alien to me. With motion characters, I do best with something like a fight pad, and basically never use shoulder buttons. Charge characters cause me crippling pain (no I am not kidding) after about 15 minutes on pad, so I have to use a stick to play those. For USF4 I mained Vega, so I used a stick, but for SFV, I switched back to pad because I did better with that. If I end up picking up Guile and he's a charge character, I'll have to switch controllers to play as him. KI doesn't require pad, because there are no charge characters.

Brosnan posted:

There are some good aspects to KI in terms of like, the feature set and stuff that the game comes with, but you are right that the game is about trading combos. The reason I didn't really suggest it as an intro game (even though I've heard the tutorial is great) is that KI's version of the neutral game is basically for one of you to be in a combo, and once you're in that mode, it's a weighted rock-paper-scissors game to see if the guy doing the combo actually gets to hurt you or not.

If the current gen options that have actual player bases (SF5, Xrd, maybe KI/MKX) don't really interest you, consider picking one of the more popular Fightcade titles and just see if you can get some goons to teach it to you. Some of the Goonsgarden crew are total sharks and will just tear you up, but others will actually walk you through stuff if you pick a game that they like. I guess if I had to pick some examples of that:
  • KOF98 - Good if you want something faster than SF4 but easier to follow than anime/Marvel.
  • X-Men vs. Street Fighter - Good if you want to dip your toe into busted-rear end Vs. games where basically everyone has an infinite that you may or may not be able to do.
  • Vampire Savior - Good if you want to have fun (seriously this game owns and more people should play it).
A few people will also say 3rd Strike and Jojo's but in reality people say they like those games more than they are actually willing to play them.

Just make sure you spend some actual time learning whatever game you pick, rather than playing hopscotch. I think forums user Faffel got into fighting games with KOFXIII, put some real time into it, and then started branching out to other stuff. But you kinda need to at least understand fundamentals of at least one thing before you start playing lots of things.

This isn't right. KI's neutral is in fact a regular neutral game. KI has footsies. KI has zoning. KI has mixups. KI has all of those things in the sense that a normal fighting game has all of things. KI's difference is that the defender is still fully engaged in playing the game while getting combo'd.

The idea that the combo game constitutes KI's neutral is ridiculous, though.

People sperg out of milliseconds of latency, but a wireless controller is probably going to add visually noticable amounts of input latency. I mean, if you just don't care, that sounds fine.

I bought a cheap used MKX PS3/4 controller while I was waiting for my real controller to come in.

I don't know how, but it's possible for a controller to be worse than no controller at all. I'm only in it for 15 bucks, so it's not like I didn't get what I paid for, but all of the buttons barely clear the plastic, everything feels flimsy as gently caress, and the tactile response of everything is vague as hell. The D-pad is almost recessed into the housing, and directions are a crap shoot. It's so bad.

edit: Everything about Real Bout is awesome.

This I get, but I just don't understand wiring at all. Each button has two connectors, one I assume is the ground and the other is the actual button. So logically I wire each button to the place it's meant to go on the board, strip the wire and screw down the board so it's tight against the exposed wire and then I'm meant to use the daisy chain to deal with the ground. This is the part I don't understand since the daisy chains have crimps on either side so if I wire two buttons to each other, I've used up their ground slots and can't wire them anywhere else.

Edit: Oh poo poo that's how it works. I'm a moron.

Secondary question, can I just wire all my buttons to one ground?

No. You don't have a ground in any of these circuits. It's DC + and -. Each set of buttons has its own common bus, and the signal return is its own wire. Keep the common for the directional switches separate from the common for the 8 punch/kick buttons. There are several reasons why this might be necessary, voltage may be one of them, but the main reason to keep it separate is because the wiring diagram says so.

i trawled craigslist for forever, and traveled down to a very old stomping ground of mine, Smiles in Milford, CT before they closed down in hopes of grabbing a good cabinet to restore up, but everything was just trashed

craigslist is all MAME abortions and big buck hunter cabinets with missing everything in my area, so i figured this was the next best thing
