‘Ghost in the Shell’ Producers Reportedly Tested Visual Effects That Would Make Scarlett Johansson, White Actors Appear Asian

http://screencrush.com/ghost-in-the-shell-whitewashing-scarlett-johnasson-vfx/

According to multiple independent sources close to the project, Paramount and DreamWorks commissioned visual effects tests that would’ve altered Scarlett Johansson in post-production to “shift her ethnicity” and make the Caucasian actress appear more Asian in the film.

It’s the latest, and most extreme, case of “beauty work,” the new trend in Hollywood to discreetly use visual effects to tweak an actor’s appearance, making them thinner, younger or stronger. The Ghost in the Shell tests were conducted by Lola VFX, the same company that aged up (and down) Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and is considered the industry leader in so-called beauty work. Though the tests were requested by the production team, once they were developed and reviewed, the idea was rejected “immediately,” says an insider.

Insane, however I do hope they use some visual trickery to make her look less human and more "uncanny valley". In the manga they even point out that her cyborg body is designed to look like a cheap, off-brand model, and not a top-of-the-line military model.

I want them to go all-in on her and other cyborgs being weird and creepy as hell. Even small things like that one scene in Stand Alone Complex where she waves her fingers in a inhumanely accurate and precise way to check if the hand works properly. Have them go through weird booting sequence whenever they wake up in the morning. Show them using eye drops since the cyborg bodies aren't equipped to clean the eyeballs/cameras. Hell, I would watch a movie based on the chapter in the manga where they show off how a civilian cyborg is made, complete with detailed explanations on what a cyborg is and isn't capable off doing.

Hell, include the villain using a model that's so old it can't emote properly so he doesn't even bother opening his mouth when speaking. Just go nuts with the premise!

that all sounds insanely cool, I'm sure none of it will be implemented into what might just be some dumbed down robot flick. I lost faith in poo poo like this since "I, Robot" which was a gloriously awful bastardization of the source material.

Kinda thought Shirow was an original otaku. Like, he had palettes of food in one big room in his high-rise, then he had a bedroom full of easels, sketchbooks, fanmail both angry and angering and a big mattress with a VR helm resting on the pillow. Maybe a kitchenette/bathroom. IIRC, he communicated to Oshii mostly through emails, storyboards, other key input.

If only we could pair those two up again with the budget this one is obviously getting...loving hell we'd have the first good adult cartoon in the last decade.

Also, Snow White and the Huntsman deserves a mention here because it's Hollywood at its worst. They have some world-famous, time-tested award-winning actors who play dwarves and then Bad Ellen Page gets all of the dialogue. Also they straight up ripped off the Deer God scene in Princess Mononoke. It's a hard movie to watch. Try it if you don't believe me.

True story: Some marketing interns dropped off several passes to "The Huntsman," which is apparently another movie in the SnowWhitiverse they're doing, to our retail store's manager, saying "give them out to your customers or have a contest! Be sure to hashtag "The Huntsman."

They cannot give them away. They had a contest that was a tweet of, in its entirety, "say #TheHuntsman for free advance screening passes" that has no retweets, favs or comments. The passes are still on the boss's desk.

Innocence was also cool because it had a crazy villain and an army of Motokos. Top that, motherfucker. Also, it continues the great ongoing joke that Batou keeps the arsenal of a small country in the trunk of his car (which he uses to kill a whole bar full of Yakuza men and a weird borg brainslave with a metal claw on his hand.)

That's a different director.

The Rupert Sanders Snow White film is an extremely underrated tribute to 1980s fantasy - along the lines of The Neverending Story, Excalibur, Willow, and so-on.

It had some great enchanted forests, if that's what you look for in a movie, and I loved how they went full sword-and-shield fantasy battle for the climax. Cool dwarves too.

Kristen Stewart's and Ellen Page's personas, acting styles, and physical appearances are nothing alike. I guess they're both brunettes?

Edit: Also my opinion of Max Landis is directly proportional to how blatantly annoying he is. He's like real life Leto's Joker.

loving-a, this is so lovely and frustrating to read. This is god drat Hollywood, they can absolutely find talented Japanese actors and actresses, they exist. The fact that Paramount and DreamWorks refuses to even try is undeniable proof of how racist Hollywood is.

But seriously, I saw this controversy coming and I can't even pretend I'm outraged. I'm generally resigned that this will keep coming for years if not decades because Hollywood. I'm only annoyed at Max Landis defending it because people apparently care about his opinion.

I dont know about any of this, just wanted to say GITS is a top tier "actually good show with an embarrassingly dressed heroine", shame the series drops in quality once she starts wearing a uniform.

They did an entire episode of robot spiders with child voices arguing robot philosophy, with the bare minimum of action framing around it, which was cool.

Doubt it was hard to sell "in this episode our animators take a break because none of the robots have mouths" to the producers :v:

Individuals involved in the production are also perpetuating the problem though. You cannot possibly think its fair to absolve the people making a profit from said financiers youre so willing to blame for the broken system. Actors and plenty of other creatives are greedy as poo poo too. Nobody above the line in this production is a starving artist.

Now that you mention it, there are several scenes where people are implied cyborgs. The weird guy getting off the helicopter, the guy whose fingers split into twenty-five tiny fingers when he's riding in the car. They didn't seem to blink either, they were wide-eyed while other characters blinked and did close their eyes when they sighed or groaned and whatnot. Maybe that was intentional. I was never conscious of it, but you saying it makes it seem likely. I forget if the Major closes her eyes when she sleeps.

Somebody already mentioned cyborgs having to use eyedrops since they hadn't perfected synthetic tear ducts. That must've been in SAC 1 or 2nd, don't remember it from the movies.

I might have been unclear, but that was just something I made up. I'm a sucker for stories where cyborgs aren't just super strong humans and there actually are drawbacks to it.

EDIT: That reminds me of one scene in the show where a boy refuses to undergo 'cyborg procedure' unless they prove to him he'll be able to fold paper cranes afterwards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xgico_Psbgk

Ahh, okay. It sounds legit enough to be in the show. Yeah, Section 9s don't really have a great life. Their bodies are government property, so if they decide to renege on their forever-contracts the company basically just goes "fine, you're fired. Peace" and presumably throws your brain and spinal column into a dumpster for the rats to eat. They also can't swim or go very long without a regular tune-up.

The articles I've skimmed about this movie are pretty annoying because its obvious some of the folks writing them haven't got a clue about the story. One of the first articles that came up on google was "Scarlett Johanssen plays a half-human half-cyborg hybrid" or some poo poo like that. Triple redundancy on paragraph one. Please reconsider, Hollywood. Just give Oshii the money and let him make another cartoon!
