I've never watched or read Urusei Yatsura so I have no real opinions about Lum. In fact my only knowledge of the show comes from a real life anime girl telling me all about the Beautiful Dreamer anime. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD-PvoHPgw4

I love Urusei Yatsura, everything about it is so great; The characters, the humor, the music, even the animation has some real choice moments and is consistently good looking for such a long running show (although I could see people not liking how the characters look at the beginning). It's exceedingly creative and mixes everything from science fiction, Japanese folkore, surreal Oshi-isms, everyday problems turned up to 11, parody, and more into a weird but brilliant concoction. It's one of my favorite anime and very worth watching despite the length. It's easy to take a break and come back to it later too since it's episodic. Here, have a cool remix album.
