Trench_Rat posted:is it true that pool halls only play classic rock to keep blacks out Partially true. You will always know what type of pool hall you are in based on the music playing. There are several pool halls here that are just white, black or asian and a some that are mixed it really depends on the neighborhood. I had a guy who use to run with me and he was sort of my bodyguard / money man. He would hold most of my money and he would drive me around to poolhalls. He would give me cred to get into some of these places and gamble and he also knew when it was time to split if things get shady. He has saved my rear end from a beatdown plenty of times and we both together have received some beatdowns in my really early years when my ego was out of control and I wouldn't keep my mouth shut when I was winning. He died last year of a heroin overdose and I didn't even find out until a few months ago when his daughter told me on facebook. Damon was probably 6'5" 350 and always carried 2 guns one under his seat and one on his waistband. He use to be a bodyguard for escorts. The escort would rent a limo and drive around town all night picking up dudes. They would pull over somewhere and Damon would get out and wait until they had sex . He hated the job but she paid him pretty well so he stuck with it. He would always be at my uncle's pool hall and we became fast friends because of my love for tupac and then when I went on the road and came back we made a deal for him to run with me full time. I could go anywhere and gamble and people would not gently caress with me or Damon. Once I got older and stopped going on the road we split ways and I never spoke to him much. He had a couple of kids and always hustled some type of way to make a living until he broke his leg and became hooked on pills and then after those ran out he od on heroin. That makes him my 9th close friend to die from a heroin overdose. maporfic posted:Would you recommend this lifestyle to your own children? I am recently married and don't have any kids. I always use to say I would let me kid choose what he wants to do and if he wants to do this so be it but my wife has changed my thinking. I wouldn't recommend this lifestyle to anyone sure it's been one hell of a life and I am one of the lucky ones to turn my gambling winnings into a business but it's still a pretty hosed up world you survive in, I am gambling with drug dealers, con artists, career criminals and all sorts of shady people. I'd rather my kid play a sport or be in plays or whatever normal kids do. I will however teach my kid to shoot pool and if he is interested I will play with him on leagues and things like that. I have a basement with 3 tables so they would be around it all the time and everyone in my family shoots pool so it will be hard to avoid. origami posted:Folks should read the mma betting thread starting where Jase posts. In his start he was an actual curse on any fighter he bet on. Pretty wild how it turned around. Even when I post all my gambling online for proof people still think I am faking. I lost a lot of money in the sports gambling thread before I figured out how to minimize my losses. I turned that MMA gambling thread into a 30k profit for me and it's all documented. I don't really care if no one believes my stories I don't really gain anything from posting them. I am never going to write a book, I don't want any money, I just have never talked about any of this stuff with anyone besides my uncle and my wife. This is the only place I have ever posted any of this stuff. So it's a way for me to relive my younger days as a ego driven idiot who is got lucky I didn't get shot.

Among other things I'm an SA lurker, a pool enthusiast, a poker player and all around degenerate gambler. For anyone who doubts the truth of these stories all I can ask is have you ever been involved in this culture? Nothing Jase1 has said comes anywhere near being unbelievable. The personalities are standard and the situations make sense. I dunno, maybe he's making poo poo up. All I can tell you is even if he is full of poo poo he's been around pool/poker/gambling. TL:DR haters keep hating.

I realize that for people like Earwicker who haven't ever played pool in a pool hall or been to a poker game (illegal or not!!! some home games are illegal bro!), it's cool to think that there's a REAL LIFE poker-and-pool master version of Saul Goodman wheelin' around out there. But that just doesn't really happen. Life is a lot less wacky than that. Sorry. That said, if you don't like my posts, they are easy to scroll past, and there is an ignore button too (just for your future reference, in case you ever have your feelings hurt by a big meanie poster again) I figured you'd be aware of it, considering your experience with the forums, but since you didn't seem to be, maybe you can take something positive from this experience and learn something new, aside from the fact that these stories are p. badly done. I'll let you guys go back to fellating this dude for transcribing every old drunk dude in a pool hall's stories about how cool they are onto the forums for you though. I've been to plenty of poker games and you have yet to actually point out anything at all in these stories that makes them so implausible. Like I said, I'm sure they are exaggerated a bit for effect as these kinds of stories often are, but there's really nothing all that outlandish in them, and they are enjoyable stories. Again, the absolute worst case scenario is all of this is fake, the guy's just trying his hand at either creative writing or retelling stories that he's heard at a bar he frequents and... what? Some gullible goons are taken in and.... entertained? drat he really pulled one over ha ha

btw I have to admit I've never actually seen most of Breaking Bad let alone Better Call Saul so I'm not sure what that guy was getting at with the Saul reference, but in case anyone is looking for some more good (fictional) gambling stories I highly recommend the novels Hard Rain Falling by Don Carpenter and The Cincinnati Kid by Richard Jessup.

The key to hustling is patience. Wait for a dummie to expose himself and let him feed his ego then when he feels like he has the advantage you expose yourself as the hustler. It gets them everytime.

Same here, I've gone pretty far down some pool rabbit holes and none of this is really crazier than poo poo that definitely does happen. Pool and gambling (both separately, but especially together) don't really attract the most normal, well-adjusted people. That's putting it really lightly. Anyone who puts the hundreds upon hundreds of hours to get meaningfully good at pool in bars and poolhalls has pretty much met the entire bottom of the barrel of society. It's loving glorious and outrageously fun in a degenerate Runyonesque way, but yeah terrible if you are trying to be a well-adjusted 9-5er or have zero clue how to handle yourself. There's a lot more I want to say about how twisted and depraved serious pool players are, but it is probably best left unsaid. It's a game where the background noise half the time is a bunch of gang members, meth dealers, legit alcoholics, serious gamblers, and other people who are able to be out past midnight on weeknights. I suppose you could play pool in nice bars and poo poo, but then you just get drunk-rear end college kids or yuppies setting their loving drinks down on the table or trying to talk for 5 minutes between turns and taking an hour per game. You play pool in a shithole and the shadiest motherfucker in there will move out of the way when you make your shot no matter how crowded it is. pool is sacred Captain Monkey posted:I dunno, I played pool and poker and such for a number of years, and while I have a story or two that are pared down (read: realistic) versions of a couple of the stories, the sheer volume and the over-the-top nature of some of the stories just makes them seem really childishly ~*cool dude*~. You're not really worth responding to, but... you haven't played much pool in places where the drinks cost less than 5 bucks. Once you're in a place with sub 3 dollar drinks, it's a whole other scene. Once you get down to the 1-2 dollar/drink nights, you're in another world entirely.
