Odds that the bathroom shenanigans have any sort of impact outside the US, one way or the other?

I think the bathroom shenanigans is an attack on LGBT by a notorious anti-LGBT group, it gives them power and reputation, and also says to anyone watching that this is something people in charge do and think is right. Not only that, but American politics heavily influence English politics anyway, last thing we want is some local bigots getting inspired.

It's certainly anti-LGBT bigot terribleness. What I mean to ask is how much do bigots around the world pay attention to bigots in america?

Well, that TERF link was wonderful, and by wonderful, I mean infuriating. It's nice to know that there are hateful idiots all over the ideological spectrum. By wonderful, of course, I mean absolutely terrible.

Not trans, but as a bisexual, if you were able to get rid of any aspect of my sexuality I'd hate you forever. I suspect a similar response from trans* people when it comes to the stuff that's important to them.

I remember someone once asked me if I could take a pill to make me straight would I take it. For the longest time I would say yes but then I thought about it and realized I only felt that way because society treats LGBT people like poo poo. So now I say gently caress that noise because I like who I am.

Society needs to change, not trans people. So this whole medication conversation is a nonstarter.

This is what I meant. I like who I am, and I like my sexuality. If you offered me a pill to make me 100% straight and let me make the choice I'd choose to flush that pill down the toilet.

edit: I honestly do think society will eventually catch up. to me, to trans people, and to everyone under the QUILTBAG umbrella (bag?)

If by Stonewall x 1000 you mean massive political protest against homophobia and insane levels of access to incredibly deadly weapons, I'm down. (I also don't personally qualify that as vengeance, but whatever you want to call it.)

If you mean VENGEANCE as in direct, personal violence as revenge, then I sympathize but it's time to sit down and watch an afterschool special about how violence only begets violence. We can do better than adopting the tactics of anyone who consider us their enemy.

This. I had the exact same reaction when I woke up, but vengeance will get jack and poo poo done for us.

Besides, uh, my entire family and most of my friends are straight cis people, and they all have my back today. Please don't hurt them.

If I hadn't read this in the guardian I would've sworn it was the onion. Still might be from the kenyan counterpart, because I don't believe it.

A few days old, but it's still nice to have good news. The NBA's moving its all-star game out of charlotte, NC because of HB2.

I mean, it's not so great for the city of charlotte, because their non-discrimination law was the excuse for mcrory to pass HB2, but, eh, still think the NBA had to do it.

You're entitled to the responsibilities of a marriage, but not the rights. The rights and benefits exist to encourage married heterosexual couples to stop doing things like using birth control and having non-vaginal intercourse.

People say lovely homophobic things all the time, but every once in a while when someone says something lovely and homophobic I randomly get really loving angry.

"one who actually needs to see a doctor more than they need to get loving married is really holding their breath."

Just wanted to comment on this. when I thought my parents would give me hell if I left the closet, I was willing to give up plenty of economic advantages, including some sweet sweet health insurance, to be openly out.

I'm not the only one. I've met homeless LGBT youth who tell me, unprompted, that they prefer their lives now to when they had a roof over their heads courtesy of homophobic/biphobic/transphobic family. I've of course heard the opposite, but hearing that at all disproves this "marriage and culture are unimportant compared to the big stuff" idea.

Of course economic issues are important, down with capitalism, fix poverty and inequality, etc. Still, things like "I can get married" are important, separate from economic issues, and sometimes (though rarely) more important than economic issues.
