genesplicer posted:I vote for Chickenator. Has that one been used before? Nope, not yet! Once the chicks are old enough, we keep the ones we want and rehome the rest. What the new owners do with them is completely up to them, if they want them for food, they are getting good home-grown chickens! Because home-grown chicken tastes freakin' amazing. And no, we've never killed any chicks through dumb-assed neglect. OK, gettin' ready to pick a name, here!

From experience I can say that if your name gets chosen, it is easy to develop a serious connection with the chick. Ham, my best buddy

Surplus E: Falun Bong Refugee posted:They're not all not gonna be left alone without a heater and die like the last time, right? That's never happened to VS. My ecobrooder malfunctioned during the quail brooding and unfortunately I lost the hatch. They were worth a good bit of cash and coming in after running out for less than an hour to find all the pips dead really sucked. Brinsea, the manufacturers, actually reimbursed me for the ecobrooder and sent along a check for the hatch while claiming responsibility. They're good people. I like ecobrooders. Sometimes poo poo breaks. It happens. On this one a wire was touching another wire somehow and it fried itself, causing it to stop functioning with no prior indication it was going to happen. VS uses a red lamp bulb when she doesn't have a broody hen. Those burn out, some start fires, and lose loads of chicks every year same as the ecobrooders do. The only "sure" brooder is a hen, and coturnix quail rarely brood chicks (I've had two broody quail hens ever, versus all of my chicken hens having gone broody at one point or another). And chickens are too heavy to do it- they just squash the chicks. Fluffy Bunnies fucked around with this message at 23:56 on Apr 28, 2016 |

No, but you CAN name them after food! Most of the obvious chicken-food-related names are taken, but I don't think there's a ChickenCheese yet if you wanted to suggest that for the naming hat...
