Currently looking through and trying to research the Secretary of State options in the OR ballot, anyone have a quick rundown of what I should be looking for to actually distinguish the better candidate between R. Devlin and B. Avakian? They both employ some good sounding rhetoric and boast impressive endorsements/prior political activity, but I'd really like to be able to delve into their connections and see who's more sincere and devoted to Progressive values.

I voted for Avakian because he gave the Sweet Cakes morons a huge fine. Richard Devlin consistantly gets re-elected by people from Lake Oswego if that tells you anything.

yeah i've just got through his okay moderate-left voting record on to his issue priorities and took a bunch of red flags to the face, definitely starting to feel avakian

yeah I was saying there'd probably be a wolf in sheep's clothing (an Obama pretending to be a Bernie, iow an Obama) next time the Dems have a presidential primary, but it really did start immediately. In the old thread I wrote a few posts about David Trone who was some millionaire running against Jamie Raskin, boasting how he wasn't taking any corporate money and saying some of the right things (but that was only possible because he was a millionaire so eh).

To be honest, I think money is the biggest threat to progressivism, not identity politics. If anything, identity politics are often a tool used by money and its agents to divert discourse.

I was tempted to write up a big effortpost about ways we can use identity politics in our favor, but I'm worried that might be outside the scope of this thread... Are we talking only about individual candidates itt, or also general strategy?

Write the post. :) In this thread maybe it won't get lost in the shuffle immediately. I'm curious what you have to say myself. I feel like race/gender/sexuality causes are good and there's still struggle left there, but I also feel like, based on the way the corporate world went hard at North Carolina over that bill, that corporations are gonna be happy to allow progress on that front. Meanwhile, I fear we have a long future of money using identity as a wedge against class, like we've seen a lot of this election season.

Yeah, he was a long shot unfortunately but I'm glad I got to vote for him. :patriot: Hopefully he runs for the next available seat and we can build up enough of a campaign framework to get him nominated!

So, while primarying from the left is great, I'm curious: has anyone had any success with building a movement for local changes? I'm thinking sewer socialism in the form of grassroots single-issue movements and ballot initiatives, like funding a homeless shelter or setting up a needle exchange. I have a vague idea of how campaigns work, but I wonder if that sort of push requires different tactics.

THE HELL IS WITH THIS ASS!?

My congressman is a Kennedy and isn't about to be primaried. He's supporting Clinton as a superdelegate which is lovely, but I suppose I could have it worse. I don't think the Republicans are even running a candidate against him this year.

I'm curious about town elections but I can't find any goddamn info anywhere. It's a town of about 45,000 so running for anything wouldn't be as easy as just putting one's name on the ballot. In lieu of that, I think I'll be looking for any active progressive groups in my area and seeing if that takes me anywhere.

You're gonna want to start going to locals.

I'm starting off small myself. Going to locals for the LD. They're looking for someone to run for state senate in two years - or so they said at the caucus - so now seems to be as good a time to start as any.

I mean, it's a peanut gallery.

Which means it's a place for progressives to talk about politics.

But it's in YCS, so best do so in the context of the current elections!

tho it is a little harder for me to talk about current elections cause there are none in RI right now really!!! so its a little less concrete for me than some other ppl, in different states! i just have future plans....

I guess the Sanders campaign was backing Sestak? All I know about him was that supposedly he had a tendency to tell the DNC to gently caress off and let him do things his own way.

If that's the case, Fetterman's numbers say one of two things:

1) Fetterman has a lot of draw

2) Sanders endorsements aren't terribly strong

Honestly I lean towards the latter (though both are probably true).
