From an academic perspective, that's pretty mind-boggling. There are tons of biologists/scientists in general who don't believe in evolution in America who just fake their way through their classes about it until they get their degree, but for the person who is supposed to be imparting facts and making sure everyone knows what is actually true to be into YEC, that's more cognitive dissonance than average in my experience. from my experience in academia, that is precisely the expected amount of cognitive dissonance
