Pissflaps posted:Why do some people need to otherise those they find annoying? It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was Us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things. This is part of reason why you should respect Terry Pratchetts writing ability.

The Labour party has always reflected current attitudes and it's members have a less than perfect record when it comes to racism. Just look at the 50's with coloured workers being explicitly banned from working at any closed shop that the TGWU ran.

This whole antisemitism thing is a bad joke with the longest setup. The Graun opinion section has been pushing this agenda for months prior just to set the stage. Not that I think the smug backpfeifengesichte at the Graun have made a concerted effort to set this all up, more I just think it's been the only angle of attack they could pursue against the hated Jihadi Jez that's actually gained real traction and even then only through the desperate swinging of dead cats by racist Australian campaign managers. If Ken hadn't waded in and put his foot in it the whole thing would probably have blown over by now. Just to get an idea of the ridiculous bias at work, compare and contrast the volume of Grauniad pieces over the past few months focusing on labour's supposed anti-semitism with those calling out Goldsmith's dog-whistle tactics.

With Burnham or Cooper we'd still be recovering from the embrassment of them supporting the welfare bill that Osborne had to U-turn on. Its pretty unlikely we'd be having the antisemitism row because what its actually about is Corbyn not supporting Israel like he's supposed to. Then people would get excited by around 2019 and we'd have young girls starting a Fandy Burnham Fanclub as he really got into his stride as the centrist alternative to the tories. Then after all the polls suggested a Labour victory he'd lose because tories continue to vote tory and left wingers continue to not vote for centrist Labour. 2021 Labour responds by lurching further right.

Thanks for all the answers. I almost missed it as I was dazzled by Goldsmith putting Sadiq Khan's name next to a picture of an exploded bus, but I love the line in that Mail article about Khan being "aggressive socialism entering Britain through the back door". I can't decide what I like more, the sledgehammer-subtle implication of known brown man Sadiq Khan having snuck socialism into Britain, or that a high-profile democratic election is somehow "the back door".

I think most Tory politicians would consider an election to be a back door in politics. It allows the chance for the riff-raff to sneak in when everyone's busy watching Dave do his pig gag.
