How much you wanna bet? The last line of this is terribly dumb because it's about the writer wanting to be entertained but in any case it's sorta clear that picking candidates based on regionalism is sort of fading and there are a lot of plusses to Franken.

Franken would be a good pick because he can go toe to toe a lot better vs Trump than Hillary can while she sits back and does the whole calm and responsible shtick. I think it would be a good choice.

Hillary will pick someone so toxic to the Republicans that they wouldn't dare impeach her for fear of that person becoming president

Basically look forward to the Clinton/Trump unity ticket

I'd be surprised a bit; on the up-shot Franken would be replaced by gubernatorial appointment (currently Mark Dayton, a Democrat) and if I'm reading the rules for MN correctly that appointment would serve until 2020 just like Franken would have. He has a fairly pro-labor record and could help solidify working class / middle class support for the ticket in the way Biden helped Obama.

Also we'd probably see a repeat of the Biden/Ryan debate with him tearing whoever Trump picks to shreds with incredulity and ridicule.

Seriously, y'all have the shortest memories. Weakness on/initial support for PIPA made him forever an enemy of the people. Evidently that lasted like 3 years until we got bored and moved on to the new outrage.

I'll go to my grave believing that'd gain her more EV than running with Booker or Castro. What's the left going to do, stay home and let Cruz choose the supreme court nominees?

I don't think it would necessarily work out that way. Hispanics are a much more diffuse voting block than black voters, and I don't think picking a Latino VP in itself is enough to create a permanent voting block.

oystertoadfish
Jun 17, 2003

there's no way a VP pick would turn hispanics (or any group) into a permanent (even if we take that to mean 'the next 10-20 years') voting bloc. plenty of hispanics, nowhere near a majority but enough to avoid monolithic D status, are comfortable with their place in american society and are straight R voters. i bet trump will get a higher percentage of self-identified hispanic than black supporters in the exit polls

This is spot on. Anyone who thinks OMG Castro = Latinos become democrats forever is engaging in the same sloppy identity poitics thinking that Republicans engage in (which leads to poo poo like Rubio thinking he can win latinos). If Hillary picks Castro, and that's something of a big if because he has quite a few negatives, then it'll be for reasons beyond young/latino.

One thing that hasn't been talked about much in the media is how, despite estimates of the US becoming a majority-minority in the upcoming decades, there will be more and more latinos assimilating into white culture and voting accordingly. I mean look at Ted Cruz (on second thought, don't actually look at him). Everyone sees him as the arch conservative representative of the religious right, not 'the Latino candidate'.

Looking back at the GOP race, Jeb! was the only one who even had a chance of winning over additional Latinos.

Yep whiteness is a fluid construct and white people will just expand its definition just like they did in the past with the Irish, the Germans, the Italians, the Greeks, the Slavs, the Russians, etc.etc.

In 2050 bored history students will look back in bewilderment that we ever considered latinos brown just like we're bewildered at the idea of "black Irish."
