That's what drives me crazy. Why did that happen?

How did the average person benefit from things being made abroad? When car production moved to Mexico, did people really save the cost of labour or did they save a tiny bit and the rest was profit?

If you're a CEO you can move production to Mexico/China then give yourself a huge rear end bonus with the money you saved the shareholders. It's all detailed out in Sun Tzu's "The Art of War".

At some point in the 80s people decided that the best business practices were the ones that got your shareholders a quick payout

AT ALL COSTS

There was a name for it but I can't remember it and the obvious Google searches aren't working

and yeah CEOs can give themselves huge bonuses for no reason too

Owning a house is an investment!

How is this untrue? Owning a house gives you an enormous amount of financial stability. Someone that owns their home free and clear when they retire is in a much better position financially than someone paying rent.

People talk about some of the benefits of renting over owning, but realistically a tiny minority of people renting are really making the most of it financially.

Counterpoint:2016 and house prices are never gonna get near where they were eight years ago. Sucks for people like groverhaus but for most people common sense goes a long way. My sister in law bought a house at the peak of that bubble and still did fine, but then again she didn't take out home equity loans to buy pinball machines and ball pits and other Millennial toys.

Also don't buy a house with a lovely interest only loan? Boomers didn't forty years ago.

The 2008 crash was caused by millennials defaulting on their high interest pinball machine loans.
