it's worth remembering that Gillard announced the date of the 2013 election months in advance, so while it's a long formal campaign it's not like we haven't had this kind of thing before

"parties deciding where votes go" has been removed as of this year, and it'll be the first election (for ages) at the Federal level without them

I did a big writeup of our Senate Voting system for a previous Auspol thread. Some of it is framed around the proposed (and implemented) changes, but it should make sense regardless

A bunch of votes have to be transported, and after some were lost in 2013 (forcing a Senate by-election in WA) they are taking more security precautions.
