One thing about small Pacific countries that is kinda striking when you get there is how much influence they are under from other countries. Traditionally it was mostly Australia and in some places the US and NZ but in recent years China is becoming a much bigger player. I've noticed a lot of random roads will have signs saying they were funded by the Chinese government and there are a lot of small businesses run by Chinese expats popping up all over the Pacific. The Japanese also built a few fire stations in Tonga, probably so they can access whales in Vavaʻu. But my personal "favourite" is the Mormons, who like to put these signs out the front of their schools and temples that tell people not to speak their native language. I think I took this photo in Tongatapu, I can't remember exactly: Also re: obesity in the Pacific, this explains a lot of it:

Papua New Guinea is another nearby island nation that hosts an Australian detention centre and has one of the most terrifying capital cities in existence. http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/inpictures/2012/09/201292892518329408.html quote:Since Australia granted Papua New Guinea independence in 1975, its capital Port Moresby has become synonymous with violent crime carried out by "raskol" gangs. Graffiti and razor meet Port Moresby residents throughout the city. Detainees are marched into custody. Unemployment has been estimated at anything between 60-90 per cent. A bullet-pierced police vehicle exemplifies the dangers officers face. An average week consists of 3 murders, 4 rapes, and 28 car-jackings. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2224612/The-Gangs-New-Guinea-Chilling-photographs-street-criminals-worlds-uninhabitable-cities.html quote:The criminals from the exotic island of Papua New Guinea are the subject of a new photo book about the Raskol gangs ruling the streets of the country's capital city, Port Moresby.

The Seventh Day Adventists in Tonga are pretty funny because they consider the international date line to be in a different place. They're one of the only denominations who have church on Saturdays and they couldn't convince Tongans to go then instead of Sundays because church on Sundays was pretty ingrained in Tonga by the point they showed up. So they just redrew their world maps so that the international date line was on the other side of Tonga, thus making Sunday Saturday.

Yeah, PNG is a depressing as hell place and the capital has beaten Aleppo and Dhaka as "least livable city in the world" some years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuru_(disease) quote:Kuru is an incurable degenerative neurological disorder endemic to tribal regions of Papua New Guinea. It is a type of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, caused by a prion found in humans.[1] quote:Kuru causes physiological, as well as neurological effects that ultimately lead to death. It was endemic among the Fore tribe of Papua New Guinea and was confined to the Fore population and those nearby populations with whom they intermarried. It is characterized by truncal ataxia, preceded by headaches, joint pains, and shaking of the limbs. Trembling is present in almost all patients with this transmissible spongiform encephalopathy; kuru is also known as "shiver".[4] quote:Those affected are usually people who follow the practice of family mortuary cannibalism.[6] In some parts of Papua New Guinea, bodies of those who died from kuru were dismembered to feast on the internal organs. "Often, they would feed morsels of brain to young children and elderly relatives."[6] quote:Alpers and Lindenbaum's research conclusively demonstrated that kuru spread easily and rapidly in the Fore people due to their endocannibalistic funeral practices, in which relatives consumed the bodies of the deceased to return the "life force" of the deceased to the hamlet, a Fore societal subunit.[10] Corpses of family members were often buried for days then exhumed once the corpses were infested with maggots at which point the corpse would be dismembered and served with the maggots as a side dish.[11]

canyoneer posted:I'm sort of surprised to learn that it's difficult to immigrate to Australia. Honestly the most amazing thing about white South Africans who move to Australia is that most of them manage to be so racist that they creep out the average suburban Australian hick. I used to work with this one guy who was laughing about the fact that back in South Africa he trained his dog to attack black people and got really mad when people told him that was hosed up
