The Little Forest Summer/Autumn movie is extremely good, I mean it's really faithful to the manga writing-wise but they went all out to show off just how stunningly gorgeous that area really is. I'm definitely going to watch the Winter/Spring one on my laptop so I can grab a bunch of screenshots.

I will say that everything in the movie has a very cooking show cleanliness to it , making it all that familiar sort of perfect and easy. Like, the manga was never really about focusing how rough and dirty things can get but I think a by-product of Igarashi's distinctive very beautiful but quite messy art-style, plus the movie having to go through some form of editing, means it can sometimes feel a little bit too idealistic. Still great though, it's worth experiencing both the manga and the movies imo although maybe leave some time between them since the script is basically the same

I can't remember if I posted about Little Forest here, General SoL or in chat thread...

I guess this is where my Little Forest movie thoughts live now in any case. I love the manga a lot and you should all read if you haven't already

I was able to read the manga of Little Forest thanks to you mentioning it, I had no idea it existed since I was dumb and didn't think that the movies had to be based off of something. I'm glad you enjoyed them though! The cinematography and editing for the films are quite lovingly done for a simple slice-of-life narrative and the actress who plays Ichiko does a great job at the quiet sincerity and anxiety that the character has while diligently harvesting and making her own food.

Yeah she was great, gave such a good natural performance

I hope you enjoyed the manga too, Igarashi has quickly become my favourite author/artist I think

It's a fairly recent technique. The shell is made with a mix of white chocolate and duck fat. The duck fat increases the melting point of the chocolate, so when the warm dark chocolate sauce hits it the shell melts very quickly.

I love Tsumugi's missing tooth.

Today I made oven dried grape tomatoes, it was a good learning experience. Super simple too! They're now resting in a jar covered in olive oil and I eagerly await to make pasta with them after I buy some parmesan cheese. There is no pics because the jar is an ugly recycled thing :(

At least I know what my default solution is whenever the dad person buys way too many cherry or grape tomatoes. They're good to snack on too and my grandma liked what I made and suggested trying seasoning with sugar for a sweet version.

Got noodles for lunch today! I went to a shop called Nudo and got the BBQ Pork with soup (there was also a Pork with BBQ sauce option...???) The shop was in a food court mall, but despite that there was a little display where the chef came out and actually made the noodles in front of the customers! It was pretty neat (and also loud as he kept slapping the noodles against the counter.) Pics are my order, I don't know if it's hard to tell but the noodles are actually slightly uneven from the chef's handiwork.

As for the taste, the pork was solid, and all clumped up. It was basically a chunk of pork partially sliced so that the slices were dangling but still held together. Sadly the only vegetables were the cabbage, green onions and parsley. I would have liked some more variety. Oh well! The broth was average, and not overly salty, thankfully. It was thinner than I would have liked, basically just boiled water with flavour. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't piping hot, though! Usually when I get asian noodles the soup is piping hot and I can barely enjoy it. The noodles were very chewy, and as far as I could tell didn't taste noticeably strange.

Overall not bad, although it's more expensive than the stuff I usually get (there's this vietnamese place nearby that sells BBQ Pork Banh Mi at 5$ for a 10 inch, it's a steal!!!) There was also a store near the Nudo that has a Chinese noodle dish (the kind where the noodles are flatter like in that Ajikko chapter), I'll have to try it sometime.

Living the Dream
It's kinda bad (the mangaka actually shitcanned an entire arc as he was starting it because he felt it was going to turn into a battle manga) but I thought of Hell's Kitchen after someone reminded me that Soylent is still a thing.

Hell's Kitchen has a more realistic antagonist for one of its major arcs than Shokugeki No Souma in the form of a science department that wants to replace cooking/food in general with premade ration/food bar type substitutes created almost entirely with just chemicals/derived nutrients, using scientific processes to recreate the taste/texture/smell of good food so it's not entirely joyless.

You know, as opposed to food Hitler.

Yeah, they're a legit better antagonist because they're assholes with a legitimately practical goal, where Azami is just "haute or not".

I believe Hell's Kitchen and Nobunaga no Chef share the same author and I feel that you're right in terms of Hell's Kitchen having way higher stakes and clear cut ideals clashing with each other that makes the food theme more exciting. Heck, the author is way better at writing food manga with actual high stakes compared to Shokugeki and the reason why people don't know about them more is that SnS is published in a more mainstream global outlet.

Like c'mon, Ken in Nobunaga no Chef is cooking for his goddamn survival in the past here. Rad as gently caress.
