In general, games should not be talked about.

More seriously, the comparison to toasters/appliances generally is dishonest. What is pop music, if not the art of music in toaster form - convenient, easy, applied? That games are interactive doesn't undermine or distract from their artistic potential, because art is fundamentally an experience, of both mind and passion. If 'game-feel' can do that, then it can be art, fully and completely art, just as literature or painting can be art.

So, to put it in your words: form is a kind of function. A specific kind of function, but a still a function.

Much like movies aren't just the acting, but also the cinematography, the music, the props, etc. games are made of multiple parts: gameplay, story, level deign, music, etc. And If eel like they are worth discussing and analyzing. Sure, not everyone wants to read Supermechangodzilla's take on Super Mario Sunshine as a capitalist nightmare, but just don't read it if you're not interested.

I mean, look at this super long video on Metal Gear Solid 2:

Related to multiplayer-chat and preservation, check out that guy's video on bots, and how their removal from modern games (and focus on multiplayer-only modes, because internet connections are cheap) makes the idea of recapturing the original experience almost impossible.
