I believe its a way for the body to remove unwanted chemicals. the balling part of crying is social, much like the "Achoo" after a sneeze is cultural only to western society. There are also accounts of the scent of women's tears bringing a man to rage, or into a "i must fix this problem NOW" mindset. so it evolved as a defense mechanism.
