JUST LOOK AT THIS SHIT POST!

Hi all! I'm still pretty new to the game, but I saw Overwatch ads everywhere and figured, "What the heck, I love the other ways Blizzard has come up with to waste my time, why not give this one a try?"

I main Soldier 76, though I'm getting decent with D.Va and Zenyatta since apparently Soldier 76 is the newb choice - makes sense, since he plays the most like other shooters. Even on my toaster of a computer, this game is SO GODDAMN PRETTY.

Anyone else ever wish there was a free roam mode where you could just wander around the map as a given character and learn the layouts/search for cool stuff?

Just make a custom server if you want to do that, it's easy enough.

Make a custom game and set all the computer controlled characters to Ana. Then change the setting (think it's under the hero details of the custom) to critical hits only. Enjoy as a horde of anas shoot you ineffectively as you walk about in leisure.

I learned the maps by jumping right in and then taking a closer look during skirmishes. But that wasn't really a great idea.

That's fair, I do need to work on making sure others are around me when I push and to be mindful of positioning when I set up shields and such. I just notice a lot of times when we begin capturing the point and half the team immediately becomes bored and goes off to the other end of the map to look for fights while I'm left alone to deal with the whole enemy team coming at me. Or when escorting the payload and I'm left watching for the enemy to keep them from the payload AND shooting up at Pharah when nobody else is AND being the only one protecting myself from flankers because everyone is all over the map. It doesn't always happen and when people stick as a group and keep their awareness up things go great but when the rest of the team scatters to the winds I can't really do anything about making a space for them to fight in.

Like I said, they don't need to stick themselves to the tank's rear end, but they need to actually be using the space I give them rather than loving off on their own.

Edit: I mean I'm only gold but in the gold games I've been in where everything went as well as possible, the entire team charged as a pack, everyone set up around the point to give it as much coverage as possible while still staying close enough to group up if needed, people ducked behind my shield if they were being shot at, flankers were called out and dealt with, etc. So that feels like it's a drat good strategy to me.

The most important thing isn't the payload - it's ensuring that the enemy team isn't there to make an organized attempt to stop the payload. Pushing forward while the point is being capped is often a good thing - instead of waiting around doing nothing and letting the enemy set up a defense at the next choke, they're moving ahead to keep the payload path clear by disrupting the enemy before they form up. If you're the only one on the payload and the enemy team is outnumbering you, feel free to pull back and wait for your team to group up again - sitting on the payload in a clearly unfavorable situation is just going to make it worse.

Don't focus too much on the objective. Sure, running around deathmatching all game while ignoring the objective is bad. But charging headfirst into a 1v3 or 1v4 over and over again because you want to stand on the objective at all times isn't good either. You need to strike a balance.

Okay yeah I understand that, I have been too focused on being the-King-of-the-Hill, that's fair to say. I've started working on being more proactive though. Rein is pretty fun at being an in-your-face (literally) wall to throw around, though I still feel like Orisa's what I turn to when I Need Things Done. I get antsy not having a gun, even if it is fun to charge-splat others. Especially Orisa.

In any case, it looks like I kinda drunk on my early power and success without actually knowing poo poo I should do, so, sorry about the noob rant.

Nah man, it's fine. This is part of the learning process, it's like how you want to understand the fundamental basics of something before you start breaking the rules. "Get your rear end on the objective" is 100% a good Overwatch 101 mindset to have, then after that it's fine to start looking at when you can ignore that rule in order to do more than you otherwise could camping the objective. I mean, honestly, if you're new and in gold then you're demonstrably Mathematically Average at the game which means you could be doing a lot worse, and odds are you can improve from there.

Yeah. Black Pants honestly reminds me of myself four seasons ago. I had the same frustrations, but eventually moved up as I improved my mechanics and got better at the nuances.

BP: you're right that your teammates are making tons of basic mistakes. The best thing to do at this point (on top of practicing your mechanics of course) is to figure out how to exploit the mistakes that your opponents are making, while also playing in a way that adapts to and jives with your team. At plat, the sort of approach that you describe (people moving together in formations, focusing fire, etc...) starts to work. In gold it's more of a crapshoot.

It's important to recognize that at gold your teammates are making lots of basic mistakes, but so are you. Everybody is bad in different ways. You can control your own badness, but not that of the five other people on your team.

It is! One of the most liberating, or alternately frustrating, things you can learn is that badness never really goes away as you climb in rank, it just manifests itself in different ways. There is no mythical SR where everybody you play with has passed through the veil to the other side where there is no more gud to git. Even literal professional players, people who actually make money to play Overwatch as their job, will spontaneously decide to abandon the point in overtime.

There's certainly times where you're playing reinhardt and for whatever reason your dps is just ignoring a tracer that's shooting you the whole time, which you want to call out. If you're the DPS and you ignore this kind of call it's a bad thing, too.

Hey I know this is maybe not super useful but you mentioned liking to play Winston and Winston is actually a great counter to Widow/Hanzo because one of your jobs as Winston in comp is to jump up to sniper perches and gently caress them up. Practice this in quick play and you'll always have a spot in comp.

Winston is also good with Symmetra -- makes it a lot simpler to knock out those pesky turrets.

What's the best counter to a defense where they're running, say, Torb and Bastion with actual shielding at a choke?

Probably Junkrat + Pharah. Pick two different angles to go from, have Junkrat spam down the barrier and keep spamming while Pharah looks for an angle she can shoot at from above with cover she can fall back to if necessary.

I've been watching Overwatch videos, and I just watched a 'biggest grandmaster fails' compilation earlier that had several wander off the point and thus lose the match.

I remember when I was new and finally had this beaten into my head by someone here.

It's liberating, in a way. It's so much less stressful when instead of approaching games with a "how can I win harder" mindset, you go at it thinking "how can I suck a little less".

Self-examination is a learned skill, for more than just video games, and it's hard for people to be objective about their own mistakes. Nonetheless I agree that it's actually more relaxing, at least for myself, to look at something and find a thing or two here and there that I could do better next time than tunnel visioning on some brass ring of future improvement and getting frustrated when I fall short. It's also nice because it helps you recognize when you have improved more clearly, when you remember that you've been having problems dealing that last little bit of damage and this time you secured that kill, or working on overextending and you sensibly pull back instead of chasing and it keeps you from being the pick that starts a losing fight.

I think it's precisely because they were fragging so hard they didn't notice, everybody tunnel visioned super hard on that fight because wouldn't you if you were stomping someone back into their spawn and poo poo there's the Mercy, she's one bar, someone get her, wait hold on-

Yeah we did that in a tourney game a few weeks back, our pharah player was above the fight firing rockets down, she even hit a direct on the mercy part of a pharmercy, but then ended up landing on the payload and just said "ok i guess i'll stand here".

As soon as we noticed that we pushed super hard but didn't kill anyone, by the time the enemy won the teamfight and got back, they saw a pharah say "hello" and jet off the now captured point. It's truly hilarious.
