Sad that I'm broke till Friday and then going out of town (away from my PC) all Memorial day weekend, so I'll miss out on the first week fun.

I do have a philosophical question though.

In any new FPS game, you will notice that if you're semi-competent at FPS games in general, you will feel like Mars the God of War the first couple of days post-launch, or like when a game gets a free weekend on Steam, getting a huge KD ration and just stomping people.

A week later you'll get your poo poo pushed in until you actually git gud.

My question is: does this happen because the people who suck get better that quickly, or because they just stop playing?

I'm still not even sure what Battleborn even loving is. I'm not sure Gearbox even knows. It seems like they just randomly combined elements of everything that was trendy six months ago into a thing and then advertised it poorly.

Overwatch, at least for now, seems to know exactly what it is.

The elevator pitch for Overwatch is so simple:

"If Team Fortress 3 had been made by Blizzard in 2016."

The elevator pitch for Battleborn from the guy who's ultimately in charge of selling it:

"Battleborn is: FPS; hobby-grade coop campaign; genre-blended, multi-mode competitive e-sports; meta-growth, choice + epic heroes."

What does that even mean?

It'd be OK if it were funny, but it never is.

I just hope Blizzard has the smarts and the intestinal fortitude to listen to their own metrics and intuition and not the loudest idiots on Reddit when it comes to balance. Also hope they never ruin it by introducing weapon drops and unlocks ala TF2.

It seems to me like it would be really easy for them to determine a balance problem with a testing server that ran pure deathmatch free-for-all using only the DPS characters (obviously Mercy or Reinhardt aren't going to win a FFA), rotating the characters among players to allow for differences in player skill. If you run a *shitload* of those and the data comes out that, say, McCree or Widowmaker wins 60% of them, you could say they might have a problem, because that means that they don't have sufficient counters, or are too good at everything.

Blizzard's writing has always been too utilitarian to be interesting to me anyway, too obviously written after the game is planned in order to retroactively justify the mechanics and events that are already in the design. It's exactly like people getting really into the backstory of Transformers -- you realize it's just a half-hour commercial for toys, right?

What I do if I *really* want to play a character I haven't played in a while and someone else has already picked them is to pick them anyway at the very start of the game, and call the other person's bluff that *they'll* be the ones to then change.

Played with a full group of goons I'd mostly never played with before last night and had a great time. We ran into a gimmick group that ran all-Soldier on attack and then all-Widow on defense. We brutally slaughtered the all-Soldier comp but god drat the all-Widow group was a pain-in-the-rear end. I like to think I clenched a last second win as Rein by charging the three widows behind the final objective, killing one in a pin and then flanking through two more who were too busy scoping to have situational awareness. That made enough of a hole and distraction for the team to finally get to the point.

I really love how this game nudges people in the right direction even if they're not watching chat or listening to comms. Having Rein automatically say stuff like, "Get behind me, comrades! My shield will protect you!" when he pops his shield is great design.

Nah, we stomped a pre-made all-Soldier team last night with a random assortment of goons last night playing whatever we felt like. My feeling was that Soldier can't do much against Reinhardt -- even his ult doesn't fully kill Rein's shield, and if he tries to flank, Reaper eats him. Maybe if that team had coordinated their ults it would've been different.

I love Zarya but I'd love her a lot more if her shields lasted 4 seconds instead of 2. Keep them at 200 block, same cooldown and everything. Just make it a tiny bit easier to actually use it without having to have *perfect* timing.

Imagined

cock hero flux posted:

That would be insanely OP considering that the way you're supposed to deal with Zarya shields is to wait for them to go away. You'd either have to wait 4 seconds, in which case whoever was shielded would shoot you because 4 seconds in an FPS might as well be forever, or shoot through the shield and watch in horror as Zarya microwaves your entire team.

I can see that I guess. It's just that if 4 seconds is 'forever' then 2 seconds feels like the blink of an eye. Like if you pop the shield BEFORE you're already being shot you've wasted it, which I guess is the trick to learning to play her properly, but just doesn't feel right. You shield someone and she says "Get in there!" but really if they're not ALREADY "in there" then the shield is gone.

I hope they introduce a Guild-like feature soon, and that the player-limit isn't something dumb like 300, because Discord, while it's a great app, to organize groups is a PITA when you can't add people to your friends list from inside the game.

D.Va's ult was like that in the first couple of days but people have learned how to deal with it for the most part now, but when you hear that goddamn tire start up you're pretty much guaranteed to eat poo poo and die if the Junkrat is any good. I do play a lot of squishy healers though who get especially singled out for it though. I've fled a chokepoint as Lucio and retreated by myself and had the Junkrat make a special point of hunting me in particular down even while ignoring the rest of my team clustered on the point.

I mentioned this in the whining thread as just a thought, but the more I think about it the more I like it. I was wondering how to make a healing class that pubbies would actually play. How about making an offensive healer that heals by dealing damage? Sort of like a Warrior Priest from Warhammer but with guns. Maybe he's in the Zarya/Roadhog class of offensive tank but instead of a damaging ult his/her ult is a huge fuckoff AOE heal.

Or he's an Omnic with a vacuum gun, like a reverse pyro with a cone weapon that drains HP from enemies and pumps it back out to heal allies in an aura around him, and one of his cooldowns is to suck them up into the gun like Roadhog's hook and drain a shitload of life from them.

Or he's a literal techno-vampire, and he puts a 'Mark of the Vampire' on an ally and then any damage he does heals the person with the mark.

Huge fuckoff AOE heals aren't that good, your team needs constant care over time. See: Zenyatta who has the worst support ult

Well I'm not a game designer, obviously. I'm just trying to think of ways to make an offensive, front line healer who can help lead a push from the front instead of follow at the back, to make a more "fun" healer that appeals to people who like to DPS. Maybe a slightly tanky short-range character who pumps out an AOE heal with every hit they land, in proportion to how much damage it does? So it would be somewhere in between the steadiness of Lucio's aura and the raw single-target healing of Mercy.

Imagined

I was just thinking that a new healer should have a healing ability that's always on that they don't have to think about, ala Lucio, but with some sort of aesthetic that appeals to the Reaper/Hanzo crowd. A true paladin class smells too much like teamwork, anathema to the Lone Wolf xxxbongrips247xxx.

It's basically impossible to make people that didn't want to help the team do so, I don't think that's a valuable design space.

Also there's already an AoE healer that does a lot of damage in the game. He's even good against torbjorn!

That's why I think they should make characters that automatically help their teammates as a byproduct of acting selfishly. But I also think if they made a character with the exact same abilities as Lucio but gave them an aggressive looking design instead of looking like he stepped out of Jet Set Radio, pubbies would play him.

What about a healing turret class. Not like a WoW shaman but maybe he has a base station. As long as he stays within LoS of it, he gets a damage boost and any damage he does is channeled back to the base station and heals anyone within 10 meters of it. It lasts until it's destroyed like Torb's turret and can be repositioned at will.

A small team is exactly where a jack-of-all-trades is most effective, imho. A large team can have multiple specialists for each contingency. 76 can partially fill in a lot of gaps from moment to moment.

Why I have fun with Lucio: the game is positioning, keeping that # below my crosshairs as close to 5 as possible, using my speed boosts and mobility to stay alive, and contributing a little damage while being an annoying little gnat and building my ult, and then using my ult at just the right times, and keeping my eye out for doot opportunities. His gun may not do high DPS, but it's super easy to get lots of hits by just firing it at head level at likely corners, and lots of characters ignore him until I peck them to death. I've killed lots of Reinhardts who ignored me while I skated around behind them. I definitely don't feel "passive" when I'm playing him. I feel much more "passive" with Mercy actually.

It's like cooking a perfect hamburger -- it seems simple, but that just means it's even more important to do everything right.
