Release date, woot woot.

I just realized with shields regenerating that Symmetra's team shield probably doesn't work like I had assumed. I figured she gave people a shield that slowly wore off and she'd have to top it off as a form of healing, but shields regenerate. So apparently its permanent until they die, that's cool. Does that mean you can theoretically put shields on your whole team as long as they don't die, or can you only have on shield up at a time?

I haven't heard/read anything about this game. From the brief video I watched it seems like a TF2-like but with a refreshed roster/maps/etc.

Is this supposed to be really good?

If you like TF2 its really hard to imagine how you won't like this. Everybody who played beta fell in love with it, even people who weren't even on the fence about buying it.

Its not super crazy deep, there's no campaign, but the multi is just real good simple fun times; like TF2.

Overwatch reminds me of the early TF2 when it was actually balanced and each character had clearly defined roles and you didn't really have to wonder what type of bullshit you would be up against today.

In Overwatch, when you see a hero you instantly know what they can do and how they're going to play and you don't have to wonder "What particular brand of bullshit is this class running?"

As much as it was good that TF2 avoided having straight weapon upgrades (for the most part) and had side-grades instead, ultimately bloating each class' abilities was real bad.

Overwatch should leave each class as-is but slowly introduce more classes over time; that should work out much better. (Pretty sure that's the plan too)

It was fantastic in its day. When you had a 12v12 of generally competent players like almost always happened on the LCs and Reddit servers it was fire. and then:

Poopy Joe was a Monkeynaut who tragically died in an explosion shortly after his rocket took off, due to a lack of Australium fuel. This was caused by Mann Co. in their unsuccessful attempt to rid themselves of weapons involved in a Senate investigation. Mann Co. took no blame for his death, and actually created commemorative plates that remembered Poopy Joe and America's dream of conquering space and Florida. These plates were actually hints of the then-upcoming WAR! Update, depicting the Eyelander, Equalizer and Buff Banner's bugle.

During the ARG leading up to Meet the Pyro, new information came to light concerning the death of Poopy Joe. According to leaked pages from Saxton Hale's Senate Hearing, Poopy Joe's rocket seems to have used a fuel source of solid australium. Saxton Hale was present at the launch facility when Poopy Joe and his rocket were prepared for launch to follow the successful launch of Vladimir Bananas. Hale stole the entire australium supply and replaced it with defective suitcase explosives. Once the rocket hit ignition phase, the entire bulk of suitcase bombs detonated simultaneously, causing the rocket to crash, killing Poopy Joe. Mann Co. then covered up the entire incident, denying all knowledge of it. The new Special Delivery map Doomsday has the player transport an Australium suitcase into Poopy Joe's rocket, re-enacting the piece of history. Unfortunately, the rocket crashes almost immediately to the tune of a warning bugle.

RIP tf2. You were the best part of the orange box. You don't owe anyone a drat thing. Rest easy, now.

Even people who love Overwatch think it looks ugly as hell

He actually describes it as "lovecraftian"

quote:

It’s not just the in-game graphics I’m talking about, it’s how Battleborn presents itself at every turn. The title screen is an ugly collage of all the characters, put to shame by other games who have made similar-looking splash screens from League of Legends to Overwatch. Once you load in, the game’s prologue is an oddly animated cutscene that looks like a low-budget Gorillaz music video. But then sometimes in other missions, it shifts into a frame-by-frame animation with more shading where characters talk to one another. Sometimes it does cutscenes in-engine. There’s really no consistency at all.

Even the fonts of the menus feel like sand in your eyes. They mix one that’s cartoony and Borderlands-ish with…Arial? I think? It’s not Comic Sans, at least, but it’s just…not good. And as you navigate the hero list and see characters with twig-arms and shrunken heads or ugly power armor, it’s like the exact opposite of the feeling joy you get from looking at the cast of Overwatch or seeing a freshly designed DOTA or League champion.

So loving bad

Borderlands is pretty decent once you hack the game's loot tables so you actually see good guns once in a loving while.

I want to see a advert from Gearbox with Battleborn and them trying to persuade people from not playing Overwatch. Something along the lines of "Why play this (heavily implied) shallow game when you can be leveling up and getting LOOT that affects your gameplay style?!"

Then a comparison of unit sales for both titles.

Ever since Modern Warfare every FPS on the market has moved to loadouts and unlocks and RPG style progressions systems and I really hope it all dies in a fire. Having a few games like that is fine, and presents a nice easy run of the mill "everybody wins" experience where you just crank in more hours and get more stuff, but having EVERY game play that way sucks balls.

Halo 4 did loadouts and bombed because of it, Halo 5 reversed them.

Now Doom has loving loadouts

Overwatch has classes, but every single gun in the game is unlocked as soon as you start playing. That's so goddamned refreshing.

I'm so sick of being killed by kids who are level 50 on release date because they don't have day jobs and have unlocked a bunch of guns you can't even use and then use them to lord over you and make it harder to gain those levels and unlock the same guns. Its just not really that great of a system for competitive shooters.

^^^ I actually like Tank and Support the most, especially Lucio/DVa/Symettra, mostly because my FPS mechanics are kind of garbage.

I'm caught in a very frustrating position where I'm better at FPS than most of my friends who are buying Overwatch, but because I'm better I'm also more familiar with the game mechanics and the characters and I've played more in beta, so what ended up happening in the open beta is they'd all pick Reaper or Genji or McCree and only that character, and then I'd be forced to play Reinhart or Mercy or Lucio, and then I'd have to stand around healing them or shielding them while watching them suck at shooting things knowing that I could actually maybe hit something once in awhile.

At least in TF2 people who couldn't aim tended to gravitate towards Medic or Heavy :smith: In this it feels like people who can't aim choose McCree or Widowmaker more often than not. Blizz messed up by making them look too cool and appealing.

Ah well, it should sort itself out in the full release after awhile, more a problem with them being really unfamiliar with the classes during beta.

Kinda wish Blizz would have locked Widowmaker, Genji and Hanzo behind a "you must reach level 15" unlock or something. I'm generally against level-up unlocks in competitive shooters but god drat, those classes are obviously the hardest to play well and yet seem to attract the most unskilled players more often than not.

Blizz went and designed plenty of classes like Bastion, Mei, even Junkrat to an extent, plenty of others, which are for people who can't aim.

Yeah the RNG sucks. At least they did a good thing and made the loot box drops consistent for everybody. Random box drops would have been awful. Even TF2 realized that they had to change the drop system to normalize drops so everybody would get one more or less every so often. Knowing you're about to level up and get another box is a good feeling.

And as you get repeat drops you'll get cash to buy whatever you want! (But the good skins are super expensive)
