I'm sad that there isn't really a concrete date for Ranked but definitely glad it isn't in at launch considering what a mess it was before. I trust them to come up with something good

totalnewbie posted:What were the issues with ranked play during beta? 1) There was no elegant solution for handling situations where both teams successfully attacked or defended on an A/D or Payload map, which happened quite often at both low level and high level play (some comp people were reporting that 70%+ of their games ended like this). Instead, if that happened you would play a single round of KotH as a tie-breaker. There's some existing solutions to this from other fps games, namely the always hot-button Stopwatch, but Blizzard seemed adamant against having that sort of system. Still, they recognize the issue, where in the majority of your games you aren't actually being tested on your skill on the majority of maps but whether you can win a Bo1 KotH, and have said they intend to address it in their own way. 2) One month "seasons" which would reset everyone back to, well, no one really knows what it'd reset them back to since there was only one season but that's a pretty awful plan anyway. 3) The way ranking up/down worked made it a pretty awful grind later on. 4) There was only a single "ranked queue," meaning you'd end up against 4-6 person premades when you solo/duo queued. This is excusable for Quick Play because there's no actual reward at stake for winning or losing, but is definitely a problem for ranked.

Reaper is actually pretty decent as a brawler if you just walk into their face with your team. I had assumed he was mostly for flanking but he's honestly quite good for deathballing and he'll shred reinhardt and winston shields for your team.

Shadalator posted:What are some awesome spots for Tolberones turrets? I know the moving environnents are good, any other primo tips? I like getting a boost from Mei at Temple Cap B. Got the chopper skin for him, so need to know this stuff. The general advice is "put them in places people won't expect", but I think a better take is "put them in places people don't look at as often." This isn't TF2, the sentry doesn't actually do THAT much damage (something to the tune of 50 dps at level 2) and isn't particularly durable either. You want the sentry near the fight, it isn't going to accomplish much if you try to set up sneaky ambush sentries if the other team is at all decent (and I mean at all decent, not like when people say "mei will never do anything if people aren't awful" which is a huge over-exaggeration). Try to put your sentry on high ground since people tend to look down or forward when moving around and in firefights. If there's no good high ground try to find bushes or nooks which are overlooking the area where your team will be fighting and aren't directly in the line of fire, but also won't reveal themselves before the fighting happens since then they can just be spammed down.

i mentioned a while back that "short range" in this game is actually pretty generous, but I wanted to see exactly what that translated to. so i did some testing, and here's my results: this is just about on the edge of what the game defines as short range; Mei's gun does 150 damage on a headshot within close range, and the bots have 200 health and each little box represents 25. it's sort of hard to visualize in first person so in the image below i stepped back and left a marker in the third screenshot to hopefully demonstrate a bit more clearly. it's pretty danged far!!

friendly reminder to not be that dude who defends on a payload map and then leaves because defense is more fun/easier, so now the attacking team doesn't get to defend

Soothing Vapors posted:Winston is good? Every time I see a gorilla in quick play I know we are hosed winston is weird, he's really easy to kill for a lot of popular characters (mccree, roadhog, reaper, tracer) but he also has favorable matchups against popular characters (widow, hanzo, all supports, genji). that said a lot of his strength comes from (1) stacking two of them and focusing targets down, (2) using his bubbles as something you can dance in and out of to DM people, and (3) not committing to a fight that'll take longer than your leap cooldown unless your team is following. he basically loves to 1v1 squishy heroes and can dive certain healer + tank/dps combos and kill the healer before leaping out, but anything that disables him like a hook or a flashbang ruins his day.

Chomposaur posted:Super tank teams (esp Winston) really gently caress my normal pub strat, which is go Pharah, flank, and blow everyone up because the rest of my team is too scared to walk through a doorway and refuses to switch characters. reaper and mccree love fighting double winston, the former in particular, but you're still trying to counter two heroes by yourself. if the other team has two winstons the ideal is for you to have a mccree/reaper and a reinhardt - the former does a ton of damage to big targets and the latter has 200 Shield hp (which Winston has a lot of trouble with) and an engaging winston is a great target for building reinhardt ult which can normally be quite difficult. e: bastion is also quite good against double bubble with some backup

re: making mic comms, remember that it defaults your channel to your group, meaning if you're queueing with even one other person no one else can hear you speak unless you go into your social menu (i think?) and change to the team instead of group. i'm not sure if its the same in reverse, if people in groups cant hear you if you're talking, because its hard to tell if people just never talk or if they're in groups and not changing.
