I'm going to be optimistic and say Touch will be $200 to buy individually, but $150 if you're pre-ordering and reserved a place in line for Touch when you bought your Rift, and retail bundles holding both Rift and Touch will be $750 as Oculus sets their sight on being able to claim they're cheaper than the Vive.

No screens, no amazingly fancy tech in this one. Just straight up production of controllers that are tracked by light sensors. These things have been around (though not as good) for a while.

It's a latency issue more than anything, I think. Bad latency in VR means the image hitches and hitches. On your PC or PS4 that might be acceptable. When your brain is being tricked into thinking the image it sees is real, it can get a little bit sickening.

Heads up, apparently that overlay does NOT work with the Rift in some games, most prominently Elite. It uses SteamVR and those games forcibly use Oculus's rendering solution, which prevents it from working.

Hopes crashed like when I tried to land on a 5g planet.

My gut has always told me Touch will be $150 for pre-orders, $200 for retail after that, and a bundle for $750 with both the Rift and Touch on store shelves for Christmas. Beat the Vive on price, because despite Luckey saying 'it is all VR we all want to win' Oculus clearly doesn't entirely believe that.

I don't regret my Rift purchase (the unfortunate realities of capitalism is that there are a lot of lovely rear end people and corporations), and I'm not certainly going to run out and replace it with a Vive immediately. Still going to get Touch when it comes out.

But I certainly will consider this when the CV2s are coming out, if Palmer is still with the company.

E: VVV well, probably, yeah, I was just more saying 'the next time I'm buying this will be a consideration'.

Looks to me like Oculus is doing shipping (for US) by how long it will take you to get your order from where they're shipping from (CV1 was Kentucky). Lots of west coast on Reddit. Not much midwest or east coast.

Yeah, this is the same company that sued Mojang over the use of "Scrolls" as a game title.

To be fair, copyright law is totally hosed, and if you aren't as protective of your copyrights and trademarks as a mother bear, other companies can use that against you to infringe on your turf.

That's less an indictment on Zenimax as it is on the laws. They literally HAD to.

I'm uncertain about Skyrim VR, less about its quality as a VR port and more about my preferences for playing a game as expansive as that in VR.

Most of that is probably that I like to watch TV in the background, or have a Twitch stream running, and sit down and relax and not be standing and such. VR isolates you, and the movement isn't quite my thing.

I'll keep giving it a shot, especially since it appears SSE and VR saves could be entirely cross-compatible, but I don't think I'll do most of my Skyrim time in VR.

You can play seated.

How, I tried it and it felt like I was at Hadvar's chest-level?

And yeah I've used the pin windows stuff in Elite Dangerous, so I know about all that. It's more for Skyrim that I like watching wrestling and stuff with it on, and that's harder to do in VR, especially when I pay for cable.

I didn't realize it was possible to use a gamepad in Skyrim, that makes things much easier, if I ever feel like sitting it'll be just like 3d tv.

It's winning me over.

So I've put more time into Skyrim VR and it's almost completely won me over.

The almost being the absence of one feature that I didn't imagine would be a bit of a deal breaker, but is.

No third-person view.

Now, I'm not some savage that plays in 3rd person, that's barbaric. But I do like playing to some degree pretty pretty dressup with my characters. After all half of the fun is looking stylish. But in VR it's irrelevant. I can't see myself look good! What's even the point of looking good if you can't lord it over the peasants! Daedric Armor then is just... just... a stat increase!

If I'm right that saves can be moved between versions (I've tried it and it worked but it remains to be seen how bad the orphan script problem would get by losing the VR master file), I'll use VR as a good chunk of my playtime, but I didn't imagine that losing 3rd person would actually be something I really care about, but it is.

Gah, I've played so much Skyrim VR today my face is physically tired from my Rift sitting on it.

I'm very glad it was made. I really hope TES VI has VR support natively, but optionally, so I can VR when I feel like and 2D when I don't. And I know it's probably possible to do Skyrim VR and Skyrim SSE cross-save compatibility, I'm just hesitant about introducing bugs that will only rear their head much later.

I don't know if I'll be doing any future playthroughs in VR, unless people dig into it and discover hey, things are fine when you move saves around, and then I'll do a good chunk in VR.

It's telling of how checked out I was on the VR landscape that Oculus announced a new Rift and I didn't know (I love my Rift but am ready for a higher-res version), but now that I know of this and that Valve has entered the game, the situation changes a bit. Oculus hasn't done me wrong in any way (apart from their launch fiasco) but Valve is a company I have rather significantly more faith in than Facebook.

Guess I'm waiting for news now!

I know the Rift S is coming out soon and I was planning on picking it up as it would be my first VR outside of the samsung gear vr. Today I saw a posting on my local craigslist selling the Rift + Touch setup for $250 and it looks unused and he's claiming he couldn't use it on his computer. Outside of saving some money, is there any advantage to picking this up over waiting for the new Rift?

Pretty much no. Rift S looks like an upgrade over the CV1. Not a tremendous one but a straight upgrade nonetheless.

That all depends on your specs of course, though. If you couldn't run Rift S then it might be worth it.

Weighing the cost/benefits of getting the Whole Index Package, getting the bare minimum since I do most of my VR seated and have a Rift if I want to play anything with the controllers (grabbing the 2nd base station and controllers on sale or price drops), or just sticking with aforementioned Rift.

Resolution is my key thing, I crave it. Just not sure if it's entirely there yet.

Yeah I'm going to try and sell my full Rift setup for a couple hundred once I get the Index. I was only intending to buy the bare-minimum setup, the headset and one base station, but fear of that not working right made me buy the whole package.

A big part of my thought was that they're obviously not abandoning the past with the Index, since if you have previous gen Lighthouses and Wands you can just update the headset. I assume you can do the same thing when Index 2 or something comes out, since the Knuckles look pretty great already.

By paying 1k right now I don't necessarily have to pay quite as much in the future for cutting-edge VR.

These posts make me smile because as an Index buyer if the Rift S is notably better than the CV1, the Index should be amazingly better.

So out of preparation, what is the best solution in Steam VR for positioning monitors in the virtual space? Nothing quite like putting a movie or Giant Bomb or wrestling or something on a screen in my ship in Elite Dangerous and plowing the space lanes while keeping entertained.

Oculus obviously has Dash for that, but is there a native Steam VR solution, or is there a good 3rd party solution?

There's a map I've seen on the Index subreddit that shows how many days it takes for a package to leave Carol Springs and reach the customer.

It lines up pretty exactly with the days the Indexes have been shipped for delivery on the 28th.

Most of the Midwest should ship today for delivery tomorrow.

I got my Index today after yesterday I wasn't present to sign for it (and my apartment office refuses to sign for residents, otherwise the apologetic driver would have left it there). Took SkyrimVR and Elite for test drives, since they're the games I've spent the most time in.

It's not the colossal difference my brain had convinced itself it would be (which was basically 'oh my god it's gonna be real life'), but it definitely is a significant improvement. $1,000 dollar improvement? Maybe not by itself, but given that Valve seems quite happy to let you upgrade what you want in the future, I view it less as buying a single headset and more as future-proofing. When Index 2 comes out with, I don't know, 4k per eye, I won't have to spend a grand (probably) to get that upgrade.

Definitely pretty satisfied, looking forward to finishing up my Oblivion playthrough so I can do another Skyrim playthrough with the better visuals.
