I'm not entirely sure I'm happy I got a Vive. The thing has an extremely annoying habit of losing tracking mid session with no clear cause and then it'll either decide to resume working a few minutes later or I'll have to restart my PC. I've even had the basestations decide to stop working a few times. It kills me that I put this much down on the hardware, but I've found myself playing Overwatch instead of going through the trouble of fighting it into submission. I've not even played anything besides The Lab and a couple of 2 minute sessions of Tiltbrush. I'm really hoping I can get some passion for it with developing for the platform, but man am I not enthused with VR so far. I know it's early adopter beware/beta hardware and I really really hope it's just like Steam's early days where it'll become amazing in time.

In me experience, losing tracking is a result of reflections. The vive is... very sensitive to reflections. I'd try covering up anything nearby that's reflective (close window curtains/blinds, cover mirrors, etc.) and see if that helps. You're not like... doing it next to a big window or anything, right?

Nope, I cover what few windows I have when using the Vive because I don't want to look like an idiot to my neighbors and I have nothing reflective in my living room. It seems like it may be an issue with the HMD itself as opposed to the base stations. One thing to note is that I'm using USB3.1 ports and I'm not sure the two 2.0 ports I have are even hooked up properly. I'm going to try that after work and see if it resolves the issue.

You could try disabling bluetooth, I know some had their base stations shut down mid game because of it, also maybe switch to a USB 2, for some reason some motherboards have issues with the Vive and USB 3. Also make sure you upgraded all the drivers there have been a lot of updates.

I set up the phone connection the other day, so I'll try getting rid of bluetooth. The real rub is that I got a new motherboard/processor for VR and I'm not sure I even have any non USB3.1/C ports. I think there are a couple built into the case, but I don't remember if they're hooked up or not. Something to fool with when I get home. Hardware is up to date with drivers, but I'll go double check the motherboard stuff to see if there's anything I missed.

I had some tracking issues that were fixed after I installed the recommended PCI usb card and used that to plug the vive in.

Can you elaborate on this? What PCI usb card?

Wow, turnaround time on the Vive is really good. Mine should arrive by Thursday based on the shipping e-mail I just got.

So they're doing like two-week turnaround from purchase to arrival assuming it actually shows up at that time. Not too shabby at all.

You ain't lying. I preordered an Oculus a day or two before they went full release and I'd still be waiting for it until Early August/Late July. Cancelled it and order a Rift on the 1st of May and got it last Tuesday.

After updating all my drivers, I think my issue was either the Vive/breakout box USB drivers getting borked due to reasons, or me updating to a beta USB driver for my MoBo that mentioned Rift compatibility by name. The tracking seems to be a bit better and the headset actually shows up and doesn't drop mid session anymore. I'm back in.

Seems the Vive issues were due in part to bad Bluetooth drivers and some weird ASUS proprietary bloatware drivers causing lord knows what issues with the rest of the system. Hopefully everything's kosher now.

Could you detail what you did to fix it? I've basically given up on power saving the lighthouses because they randomly sleep on me causing tracking to drop while using it and also have an ASUS motherboard, so it could be the same issue...

I'll see what I do. It's been an on and off process since I got it last week, so hopefully I won't forget anything.

I don't know if it was related or not, but the Asus Ai Charger bloatware that came with my mobo was causing system crashes, I removed it and things got much better fast. It was causing issues, but I think it would have done that regardless of whether or not I had a Vive. Update your system drivers; my z170 deluxe had some beta USB drivers that specifically mentioned the Rift for usage. BIOS update and anything else that's not current as well. Unplug your breakout box from your tower and go into your SteamVR settings and there should be an option to delete all associated drivers. Do that and plug your breakout box back in to get your Vive drivers reinstalled. Hopefully from there things should start to cooperate.

Haven't gotten to that point myself, but I've thought about it a couple of time in the VR Pool. My only gripe with the game is that the collides on the dice the put on the table are goobered up with too much friction so they don't actually roll.

It really depends on how the organization has the units priced. You're paying for shipping one way or the other, one just tells you that you're doing it. iirc, most places that do free shipping figure the price of item as Cost + Profit Margin + Average shipping amount for the targeted demographic/market segment. Meaning that if you're, say, next door to the regional distribution center you're getting shafted but if you're in another state or the other side of the country you're getting a break. It's rather socialistic when you think about it. On the other hand places that charge a seperate shipping fee are more likely selling you the item as Cost + margin, so you're getting a better deal if you're near.

Depends slightly on the region you're in, but in the US Oculus still haven't fulfilled all the orders from the day preorders opened in January. General advice seems to be to buy from a high street retailer rather than direct from Oculus.

That's a bummer. I ordered a day or two before the "launch" and I'd still be waiting for the better part of a month. I can't help but wonder if the Vive hitting supply parity is due to a better supply chain on the part of HTC or the smaller demand due to Oculus's market presence. Or both.

The Lab's Archery game imo. Hot dogs horseshoes and hand grenades looks impressive and the dev is pumping out updates, but I've no clue as to how the gameplay is or the extent of it. I'm essentially just waiting for the sale next week before I buy anything. The packaged games and assorted demos are getting by until then. That and Pool VR.

However, I also think its just so so early in the medium that these things will get figured out as time goes on.

I was chatting with the fellow at VALVe that designed the lenses for the Vive. When asking about some of the things being discussed here, he replied that we are at the Pong era of VR. The Vive and Oculus will not change the world; we don't know how to do anything. The 3rd and later generations will change everything though. We are quite literally learning to walk again. I've often wondered about the lack of abstraction that results from motion controls; I think that the notion of playing "normal" games and applying their conventions in VR is likely a fool's errand. This is the wild west, normal conventions need not apply any longer.
