A high speed line up each coast would be accessible by like 80% of the population*. *number pulled from rear end, but probably pretty accurate.

The population density is too low. You would have to drive for 40 minutes to the station, as opposed to walking taking/public transport to get there. You might as well take a plane at that point. Basically it will happen when you somehow manage to round up all Americans and shove them into communist style concrete hellscape that the rest of the world lives in.

You have to drive (admittedly less) to the airport as well, but then no three hours in security line and zero chance you get a hand up your rear end.

The Acela is a high speed train. It can only high speed for some small fraction of the trip because it has to share 100 year old tracks with freight and regular commuter rail. We'd need to eminent domain a bloody hole through the country to get actual fast.

i would like fast trains too. but yeah the current railways are poo poo and it doesn't seem like the higher ups actually want to pay for the work to fix things so our trains are gonna be stuck living in the 1870s for a long time.

Trains are terrible. America is wise not to build any. They are late all the time, when there is any kind of "bad" (rain, heat, wind) weather they just stop running altogether.

There was going to be a high speed rail line running from Chicago/Milwaukee/Madison/Minneapolis-St Paul, and the previous governor of WI and mayor of Milwaukee had gone through a lot of effort and invested state money to bring a large train manufacturing company to Milwaukee County and secured over $800 million federal stimulus money to build the rail line. Then Walker got elected. He said he would only take the stimulus money if it could be used to improve one existing train line and state roads, which of course was never going to happen and he knew it. It was a "rejection of wasteful government spending" where he stops a very promising project and lets the money get dumped into California's rail line projects; therefor it still gets spent but he robbed his own state of the jobs and mass transit it would have provided. Then he refused to pay the train manufacturer for the trains the state had ordered for the high speed rail line, costing that company over $50 million. It would probably be at least partially completed by now if he hadn't been elected. Acid Haze fucked around with this message at 21:28 on May 29, 2016 |

And jeez, currently-slow amtrak ain't even worth it. was just planning a vacay for later this year and I always look at train prices because riding a train can be very pleasant even if it takes longer--2 tix that run through a single line are barely cheaper than 2 plane tickets that'll get you to the same place in like 1/5th of the time. I imagine new high speed rail tickets are gonna be PRICEY. My GF lived in Nagoya for a grip, she and her friends would just take the bus to Tokyo than pay the premium to get on the shinkansen.
