Hieronymous Alloy posted:Well, it's doing exactly what Madison wanted. If you're an aristocrat this country is still doing pretty great. Keep in mind Madison bought up a bunch of land on the Potomac so that he'd get rich(er) when DC got built. We're getting the plutocracy we planned for. And to be fair, it's not like they were making up this pro-aristocratic worldview out of whole cloth. The Founding Fathers and other intellectuals of their generation were all big fans of Classical Antiquity, and the most stable governments in ancient Greece and Rome tended to be aristocratic ones (as Aristotle famously observed). Even the Athenian democracy held that the instruments of power should be left to the kalloi kagathoi ("the beautiful and the virtuous"), ie: those that were high-born and well-bred. So it makes sense that the Founding Fathers would go into creating the American state trying to emulate this public mindset. Those super-rich Virginians were debtors more often than not, living like an English country lord turned out to be very expensive and tobacco didn't always pay the bills. Which is part of the reason (racist madness aside) that they were so loathe to give up their slaves, because they represented a big chunk of wealth that could be easily converted into cash if need be.

Hamilton was an abolitionist but a big fan of banks and would be solidly on the one-percenter side today. Jefferson was a slave rapist but generally cared about the poor white people. Basically for the founders you're looking at "cares about the poor / cares about people who arent white" pick one of two.

Franklin was an abolitionist later in life, to the point where he visited a black school and declared the black kids equal to white kids, and he supported stuff like publicly funded hospitals. He was racist in a paternalistic sort of way, but was so far ahead of the curve circa 1800 that it's pretty impressive. In the lead up to the French Revolution he was basically portrayed in France as loving Zeus, which is pretty awesome, and fairly accurate insofar as I think Zeus banged everything in Greek mythology at some point or another.

BI NOW GAY LATER posted:Trump losing is basically going to signal the end of Paul Ryan's career because they're going to RINO the hell out of him. It's going to be interesting to see what happens with the 2017 budget debate. Do the Republicans get a continuing resolution this time, or do the Democrats force them to try shutting down the government just before a general election? Even if they manage to delay it until after the election, the party will likely be eating itself alive and it's safe to say Ryan won't be having much fun in any case/ This is speculation on my part and I'm too dumb to look up the tea party's electoral prospects, but won't a democrat surge hurt moderate house Republicans the most? Moderates are more likely to be in competitive districts that have a chance of being flipped, while safe republican seats are more likely to have already been primaried by members of the Freedom caucus. If this is the case, the house could be even crazier after the election even without the inevitable infighting following a humiliating defeat.
