How do you guys feel about Root Maze? I keep wanting to make a Root Maze based deck with Chancellor of the Tangle, Wall of Roots, Garruk Wildspeaker, and Plow Under. Ideally I would open with Chancellor mana into Wall of Roots into Maze. I know this isn't the brewing thread but I feel like Root Maze should be played more.

The Mighty Quinn fucks up those first two decks:

MAINDECK [60]
Planeswalker [1]
1 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
Spell [36]
2 Council's Judgment
4 Enlightened Tutor
3 Helm of Obedience
1 Humility
2 Isochron Scepter
1 Moat
1 Oblivion Ring
4 Orim's Chant
4 Rest in Peace
1 Runed Halo
4 Sensei's Divining Top
4 Swords to Plowshares
3 Terminus
2 Unexpectedly Absent
1 Wrath of God
Land [23]
1 Karakas
2 Kor Haven
4 Scrying Sheets
16 Snow-Covered Plains

SIDEBOARD [15]
1 Baneslayer Angel
1 Cursed Totem
2 Disenchant
2 Ethersworn Canonist
1 Leyline of Sanctity
1 Peacekeeper
3 Pithing Needle
1 Seal of Cleansing
1 Terminus
1 Wrath of God
1 Warmth

The idea is you play real hateful poo poo that stops the opponent from doing what they want to do and then you kill them with elspeth or, more commonly, RIP/Helm combo. You also have Scepter/Chant that effectively locks opponents out. Scepter also good with unexpectedly absent (cast it for zero when opponent cracks a fetch), though I would try an abeyance or two in that slot. The "engine" of the deck is snow lands and scrying sheets.

That's a beautiful deck.

Exactly. RIP Miracles is where to be right now :getin:

But in all seriousness, the decks that get better are mostly slow storm, lands, High Tide, elves, and RUG Delver at first glance. RIP/helm is awesome already and between that and blood moon nearly all those decks except high-tide are very soft to that particular combination of hate pieces. At least thats where I'm gonna be starting from for a post-top control list in legacy.

Also a moment of silence for the last Weissman style deck that was still tier 1 in any format.

High Tide player here. I appreciate your optimism!

1 Ethersworn Canonist
1 Flusterstorm
1 From the Ashes
1 Izzet Staticaster
1 Kozilek's Return
3 Pyroblast
1 Pyroclasm
1 Spell Pierce

This is what I've been testing. It so far has done quite well in testing. It crushed death and taxes, jund, elves, bug, and eldrazi. I've only dropped games to jund, enchantress, and sneak and show. I have only played vs sneak and show twice, and won one and lost the other.

Sweet that looks right up my alley. Only missing JTMS.

For anyone interested in following the continuing evolution of the rip/helm list, it's gotten significantly cheaper as in testing moat isn't as critical as I thought (even though I want to play it more than anything).

https://deckbox.org/sets/1676719

Deckbox will be kept up to date, here's a snapshot of right now:

2 Arid Mesa
4 Flooded Strand
4 Island
1 Mountain
2 Plains
3 Scalding Tarn
3 Tundra
2 Volcanic Island
1 Blood Moon
4 Brainstorm
1 Council's Judgment
1 Counterspell
1 Detention Sphere
2 Energy Field
2 Enlightened Tutor
4 Force of Will
1 Helm of Obedience
2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
1 Keranos, God of Storms
2 Monastery Mentor
4 Ponder
1 Porphyry Nodes
2 Preordain
1 Pyroclasm
3 Rest in Peace
1 Spell Snare
1 Supreme Verdict
4 Swords to Plowshares

Sideboard:

1 Engineered Explosives
2 Ethersworn Canonist
2 Flusterstorm
1 Grafdigger's Cage
1 Humility
1 Izzet Staticaster
1 Kozilek's Return
1 Porphyry Nodes
2 Pyroblast
1 Red Elemental Blast
1 Seal of Cleansing
1 Wear // Tear

Current debate is the distribution of wraths, particularly in the board. EE is insane, but having more pyroclasms could help elves, by far the most difficult matchup that's a creature deck. Also it's got too many good cards vs elves in particular, but even with all of them it's only mostly solid. In particular we need data about this vs lands and storm if anyone else wants to play this or similar and give feedback I would be grateful.

Is there anything that is a reasonable substitute for JTMS in this list? Cryptic Command perhaps?

So after some more testing, in particular against lists with decay, moat is back in the RIP/Helm list. https://deckbox.org/sets/1676719

Energy field was so bad vs bug that a non-decayable lock piece other than humility was needed to live.

Surprised that Moat would be good against Delver or is this a non-Delver BUG?

The UWr Helm Combo list worked well, but it wasnt good enough to be worth playing in a GP. I tested several other piles for UWx control, and had some success with an AK build, but it was also probably not good enough. If I went I would be playing either a 4 color leovold pyromancer build, or a UWR PyroMentor build. Either way I would be playing at least 2-3 sudden shocks, theyre too good right now in the current meta vs basically every deck but eldrazi and lands.

This is where I am right now on mentor variants, but its questionable whether its worth cutting some number of spells and 1-2 lands for wastelands or not. I am also not sold on 0 spell snares, but I dont know what to cut to make room.

Right now it feels like pretty much every matchup except Lands is at least even if not a bit favorable.

That looks like a fun list. Sudden Shocks vs Infect, Affinity...what else am I missing?
